When the film was released, director Mathieu Kassovitz called it a "bad episode of 24 (2001)." In an interview with amctv.com, Kassovitz said that 20th Century Fox interfered throughout production, and he never had a chance to shoot a scene the way it was scripted, or the way he wanted it to be.
The round Sigil Tattoo seen on Vin Diesel's neck is known as "The Gate of the Necronomicon" and is protective, symbolizing Man, the Creator and The Watchers.
The film had to be bailed out by the studio's insurance company, after running over-budget and falling significantly behind schedule.
Mathieu Kassovitz described Vin Diesel as "a completely idiot actor".
Vin Diesel dropped out of the lead role of Hitman (2007) to star in this movie.
The movie got almost no promotion, due to a feud between Mathieu Kassovitz and 20th Century Fox over the final version.
According to Mathieu Kassovitz, Vin Diesel was astounded at how much the film had been shortened. Having just completed production of Fast & Furious (2009), he had not seen a cut of the film in six months. He joked, "Am I even in the movie any more, or am I on the cutting room floor?"
Was not screened for U.S. critics.
In March 2007, the film crew in the Czech Republic took a two-week hiatus to deal with uncooperative weather, such as the lack of snow, and problems with set construction.
Mathieu Kassovitz later released a documentary called Fucking Kassovitz (2011) covering the production.
Vin Diesel was cast by 20th Century Fox, against Mathieu Kassovitz's wishes.

The aircraft on which Toorop, Sister Rebeka, and Aurora are flying to New York, is a Boeing-787 "Dreamliner". This is the first appearance of this airplane in a movie. However, the interior shot shows them sitting on seats, most likely belonging to the cabin equipment of a Boeing-737.
The film takes place in 2058.

The Cyrillic tattoo on Vin Diesel's left hand reads "SLON" ("Elephant") which stands for "Solovetsky Lager' Osobogo Naznacheniya" (Solovki Special Purpose Camp), one of the earliest GULAG's encampments (1923-1933). Later, this tattoo was popular among criminals, with a new interpretation: "Smert' Legavym Ot Nozha!" (Death for Cops From a Knife!).
Mathieu Kassovitz originally intended the film to be highly ambitious. However, 20th Century Fox interfered with production all the way through, preventing Kassovitz from shooting scenes as he intended, sometimes even going against the script.

Vin Diesel uses an Oakley Icon Backpack 2.0 and Factory Pilot gloves, and an assortment of Snow Frame goggles in the snow bike chase are on all the actors.
