Kamina Ayato lives an ordinary life. He goes to school. He lives with his mother. He has schoolmates. But all of that changes one day when massive machines, known as the Dolem, attack the city of Tokyo with their destructive vocal powers. Caught up in the chaos, Ayato meets a mysterious girl named Mishima Reika. She leads him to the sanctuary, resting place of the RahXephon, a giant humanoid being with powers to counter those of the Dolem. Upon its awakening, Ayato finds himself synchronising with the machine and it takes him to the world beyond Tokyo. It seems that Tokyo, more precisely called Tokyo Jupiter, has been cut off from the rest of the world. Those living within the boundaries of Tokyo Jupiter believe that the rest of the world has been decimated, when in fact they live in a world controlled by the Mu. Now, facing the truth, Ayato must come to terms with his new reality, for he is a central element in the fate of mankind. Written by
In the opening song, tattoos are described as being "chiselled in". This refers to the traditional Japanese art of tattooing, irezumi, where the ink was in former times inserted into the skin not with a needle but with chisel-like implements. See more »
The title pretty much says it all, RahXephon is possibly one of the worst anime series I have ever seen. This show gets a lot of praise but after watching more than a few episodes I have no idea why.
The storyline is boring, undramatic, unrealistic, has too many characters, has too many ill-thought out romances and filled with cheesy dialogue. The animation is below average at best, with very little movement of viewing angle during supposed "action" scenes. The action scenes that are there are few and far between and hardly exciting. In the mecha battles there is very little movement and frequently as if to save the animation budget, the screen will flash to a stationary object such as a sign and then will then change back after the action is over. The music of this series is constantly praised but to me it was a mix of unfitting classic music and annoying elevator music. It was horrible, and this is coming from someone who enjoyed the elevator futuristic style soundtracks of other series. Character design is mediocre- they are all blandly designed and horribly animated. The characters themselves have generic and annoying voices in the English dub. The characterization is nonexistent- everyone having little to no personality. I actually didn't care what happened to any character.
I'll admit I am a big Neon Genesis Evangelion fan, but that hasn't stopped me from greatly enjoying other similar anime in the past, such as Eureka Seven. How RahXephon is considered good, let alone considered by many to be superior to Evangelion is completely lost on me.
If your a fan of Evangelion or other high action anime, do yourself a favor and stay far far away from RahXephon.
