Storyline

This 6-part fly-on-the-wall documentary charts English football club Sunderland AFC throughout the 1996/97 Premier League season, as the newly promoted club tries to avoid relegation. It also follows the building of the club's new multi-million pound stadium: "The Stadium of Light". The documentary team had access to the players, fans and backroom staff at the club, giving Sunderland fans and general sport fans a fascinating insight as to how a club is ran. Narrated by Sunderland-born actress "Gina McKee", the show was made famous in the UK due to manager Peter Reid's half-time swearing tirades. Written by John Ferguson <john@john-ferguson.co.uk>

I used to work at Sunderland AFC and can confirm that none of the ranting was for the benefit of the camera.

Peter Reid behaved like this at every game.

His language was fantastically foul.

I can also confirm that he is not alone among football managers and coaches in this. In fact he was not the worst offender. I am sworn to secrecy as to who the worst ranter and swearer is.

Oh alright then, it's f*****g Phil Thompson.

For more background, I recommend the excellent book 'Let There Be Light

  • Sunderland AFC'. a superb read.
