Gavkhuni is a bold and daring experiment by its director Behruz Afkhami. I can not recall any other Iranian movie like it. It is as though a novel has been brought to the screen verbatim; just adding scenery to the novel being narrated with hardly a word of dialogue. For the first hour we don't even see the co-leading actor (Bahram Radan) only hear him narrating the story. The other leading actor, Ezatollah Entezami (who is magnificent) is seen but only speaks a few words. Comparioson with Lynch, specially Mullholland Drive, are apt. Gavkhuni plays with the audience on the subjects of memory, fantasy and truth and lets them sort out the puzzle. It will not be everybody's cup of tea but I found it riveting and hypnotic.
