As research for his role of pop crooner Bobby Darin, Kevin Spacey attended several of Michael Bublé's performances.
When the film was being planned by Paramount, executives thought that Kevin Spacey was too old to portray Bobby Darin, who died at 37, and wanted Leonardo DiCaprio instead.
The project took 17 years to be realized during which time six A-List writers and 20 producers were involved at one point or another.
Drew Barrymore was considered for the role of Sandra Dee.
The lead role was offered to Tom Cruise who rejected the script.
In 1987, Bruce Willis was set to play Bobby Darin.
Initially, Barry Levinson was set to direct.
The lead was offered to Leonardo DiCaprio who chose to do The Beach (2000) instead.
At one point, Barry Levinson wanted Johnny Depp for the lead role.
Kevin Spacey was 44 years old when he made this movie, an age the real Bobby Darin never reached.
(at around 30 mins) At one point in the movie, Bobby is meeting Sandra's mother Mary Duvan, and says playfully: "How is it you are Sandy's mother and not her sister." In real life, it was Bobby Darin himself who discovered that the woman he thought was his older sister was actually his biological mother.

The James Toback draft which followed an earlier draft by Paul Attanasio concentrated on Sandra Dee's alcoholism and childhood molestation by her stepfather. This draft was then given to Lorenzo Carcaterra. His draft, the last before Warner Bros. and Barry Levinson left the project, was 164 pages long.

During the song "Some of These Days", Kevin Spacey says "ah, do it, Sophie", as Bobby Darin did in the original recording. This is a reference to Sophie Tucker, the "Last of the Red Hot Mamas", who first recorded the song on February 24, 1911, and later re-recorded it in 1926.
