Season 1

Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot

Ryan Atwood is a troubled, 16-year-old kid living in the rough, crime-ridden neighborhood of Chino located in San Bernadino, California, who gets thrown out of his own house by his alcoholic and neglectful mother and her abusive, alcoholic boyfriend after Ryan gets into trouble with the law when his self-destructive older brother, Trey, implicates him in the theft of a car. Ryan is appointed, Sanford 'Sandy' Cohen, a public defender, who takes the homeless youth to his house in the posh and picturesque neighborhood of Newport Beach, Orange County, (the OC) and lets Ryan stay in the guest house against the protests from Sandy's wife Kristin and their bumbling and socially handicapped son Seth. Ryan forms a bond with Marissa Cooper, a friendly, but similarly emotionally troubled teenage girl living next door who introduces Ryan to the world of beach parties and life of the idle rich in Newport Beach. But Ryan's feelings for Marissia are hampered by Marissa's egotistical jock boyfriend, Luke Ward, whom takes an instant dislike to Ryan. Marissa's father Jimmy, a financial stockbroker, begins having problems with his business and tries to get out of the hole he's in to keep his narcissistic, gold-digging wife, Julie, from finding out.

Season 1, Episode 2: The Model Home

When his mother disappears and faced with the prospect of life in a group home, Ryan decides to run away from Newport, but Seth and Marissa convince him to stay and hide in a vacant building project. Meanwhile, Jimmy discusses his recent financial woes with Kirsten, and she offers a solution. After the jealous Luke witnesses a close encounter between Marissa and Ryan, he confronts Ryan and a fight breaks loose in the house where their quarrel accidentally starts a fire. Ryan nearly dies in the flames, until surprisingly Luke returns and saves Ryan's life, which unfortunately reveals Ryan's continuing presence in Newport leading to both him and Luke getting arrested for arson.

Season 1, Episode 3: The Gamble

Ryan has a difficult stay in a Juvenile Hall prison for the arson charge. Seth makes Kirsten aware of his anger over Ryan's situation, and Kirsten makes a compromise to bail Ryan out of jail to stay with them, temporary. Later, Ryan's mother, Dawn, makes a surprise visit to Newport, and things don't go quite as she and Ryan may have planned due to her constant drinking. Meanwhile, the monetary secret involving Julie, Jimmy, Kirsten and Sandy comes to a head when Sandy finds out of Jimmy's financial problems about the money investments he lost and unwisely 'borrowed' without permission from his clients bank accounts to cover it up and lost that money too, and of Kristen's lending their money to help Jimmy which brings out more jealousy in Sandy for he's aware of Kristen and Jimmy's romantic past.

Season 1, Episode 4: The Debut

During rehearsals for Newport Beach's annual Cotillion Ball, Ryan continues to pursue Marissa and asks her to be his dancing partner, while a continuing jealous Luke tries to break them up. Seth as eyes for the new girl in town, Anna Stern, but becomes torn over his feelings for Summer Roberts, the outgoing socialite he's had a crush on for years. Meanwhile, Sandy becomes upset over Kristen's loan to Jimmy for his financial problems which finally come to light at the ball when one business client decks him in the face after learning that Jimmy lost all of their money.

Season 1, Episode 5: The Outsider

Ryan takes a job at the Crab Shack diner where a co-worker, named Donnie, might mean bad news for the Newport kids when he takes Ryan and Seth out to party queen Holly Fischer's parties where drugs and alcohol flow freely. Ryan asks Marissa out on a date, and when Luke again tries to intervene, Donnie decides to take matters in his own hands when he tries to starve off Luke... with a gun. Meanwhile, Sandy attempts to help Jimmy sort out his life, and gives him some bad news that be may go to jail for his unauthorized loans to cover his tracks. Also, Julie reveals a long-held secret to Kirsten about her past.

Season 1, Episode 6: The Girlfriend

Kirsten's uptight father, Caleb Nichol, comes for a visit along with his new girlfriend, Gabrielle, a 24-year-old model. Caleb does not hesitate to speak his mind and immediately angers both Sandy and Ryan, and browbeats Seth, with constant criticism with their backgrounds, while Gabrielle makes a move on Ryan. Kirsten finds her job at Caleb's company, Newport Group, in jeopardy, while Sandy considers making a change. Meanwhile, Luke approaches Marissa and tells her that he wants a second chance with her, much to Ryan's disappointment. Also, Summer makes the moves on Seth, who wonders if her feelings are real or if she just using him.

Season 1, Episode 7: The Escape

16 September 2003
Ryan, Seth, Marissa and Summer plan an end-of-summer trip down to Tijuana, Mexico (aka: the TJ). Luke wants to tag along with them to try to get back together with Marissa, but she later changes her mind about him when she catches Luke making the moves on Holly Fischer. Back in Newport, Jimmy has plans of his own to get out of his financial and legal problems, which don't sit well with Marissa or Julie. Sandy gets a new job at a large prestigious law firm, which Kirsten can't understand why.

Season 1, Episode 8: The Rescue

29 October 2003
While Marissa is in a hospital in Newport recovering from her near-fatal drug overdose in Mexico, Julie unfairly blames Ryan for her condition and forbids him from seeing Marissa, who does not appreciate the help. Meanwhile, Sandy starts his new job, but finds himself surprised by the case work. Kirsten finds herself surprised by Sandy's new co-worker, the attractive Rachel. Also, Ryan enrolls at his new school, with conditions after his past life in Chino is revealed. Ryan and Sandy then stage an intervention for Julie about her handling of everything in which she lets Marissa stay with Jimmy who moves out and rents a small apartment for himself.

Season 1, Episode 9: The Heights

At the opening day of the new school year, Ryan doesn't feel like he fits in at his new school of Harbor High, and Luke doesn't make the situation any better when he and his jock friends continue to bully and harass both him and Seth, who doesn't like being at school any more than Ryan. Meanwhile, Sandy accepts a case at his new job, a case that will test his relationship with Kirsten and her father Caleb. Anna and Seth hatch a plan to make Seth feel better with his current situation. Also, Ryan and Luke confront Marissa and force her to choose one of them.

Having chose Ryan over Luke, Marissa wants to make plans for their first romantic date together, while Ryan does not know how to behave for his first date with Marissa. Seth takes matters into his own hands involving getting to like Summer, but gets taken in with Anna whom also develops feelings for him too. Meanwhile, Ryan finds Caleb with another woman, that being Julie Cooper, while Sandy continues to resist temptation with his co-worker Rachel.

Season 1, Episode 11: The Homecoming

On Thanksgiving Day, Ryan ventures to his hometown in Chino to help his imprisoned brother, Trey, with some business he has, while Marissa tags along with Ryan to get a look at the neighborhood where he was born and raised, but it brings out some bad situations and unpleasant trips down memory lane for Ryan. Back in Newport, Kristen invites Caleb and Julie over for Thanksgiving dinner where Seth takes the player role of playing both Summer and Anna. But he does not play it well, leading to both of the girls running into each other and learning about Seth's two-timing act.

Season 1, Episode 12: The Secret

Ryan learns more about Luke when they're paired for a school history project which is that Luke isn't the macho tough guy he puts out to his friends, but he is quite a nice person with a perfect home life. But things take a sudden turn when Ryan and Luke stumble upon a secret of Luke's father's homosexuality. The next day, the news of Luke's father is the talk of the whole school and the town resulting in negative reactions to Luke from his friends, in which he blames Ryan who denies telling anyone about his father being gay. Meanwhile, Kristen continues to avoid Jimmy over their disastrous Thanksgiving dinner encounter, while Sandy has some advice for Jimmy over his legal problems which doesn't set well with Julie over selling their house to pay off the money he lost.

Season 1, Episode 13: The Best Chrismukkah Ever

Ryan is officially introduced to the bi-religious holiday of 'Chrismukkah', thanks to Seth who has set this up for his parents; the Catholic Kristin and the Jewish Sandy. At the same time, Seth insists he has two Godly forces helping him as he continues to play both Summer and Anna by claiming he has chosen the other. Meanwhile, Marissa slides more into depression and debauchery over her family life problems and gets arrested for shoplifting with Ryan. It gets worse when she gets drunk at Seth's 'Chrismukkah' party and nearly gets arrested for drunk driving while Ryan covers for her, and afterwords gets into a fight with her saying she can't do this to herself anymore. Kirsten does something that could cost her more than just her job over speaking out of her father Caleb's shady business deals. Summer and Anna find out about Seth's playing of them and decide to give him a 'very special gift' to make him choose which one he wants to be with.

Season 1, Episode 14: The Countdown

Kirsten's outgoing and spoiled younger sister Hailey Nichol, notorious for not doing anything with her life, returns home and asks to stay for New Year's Eve. Although getting along fine with everyone, she shows her true colors when she throws a destructive New Year's Eve party at the house when Sandy and Kristen are out and locks both Ryan and Seth in the guest house. Meanwhile, Sandy and Kirsten get lost while traveling to a restaurant for dinner, and, thinking they're in a rut, find themselves out of their environment at a swingers house party. The mysterious Oliver Trask, a charming young teenager Marissa met in her therapist's waiting room, takes advantage of a mild quarrel between her and Ryan to cast his spell on her and invite her and her friends to his New Year's Eve party at his parents' posh penthouse. Also there in attendance are Summer and Anna who talk about Seth and decide to find him to make him choose which one of them he wants to be with.

Season 1, Episode 15: The Third Wheel

Hailey discovers that she isn't welcome into the Cohen household as much as she thought due to her continuing irresponsible and brash lifestyle and personality leading to a fight with Kristen and Sandy over her living arrangements. Meanwhile, Oliver continues to charm Marissa and throws his weight around by inviting her, Ryan, Seth, Summer, Anna and Luke to a rock concert where the band Rooney is playing. There, Luke makes some new friends with the band fans, while Seth and Anna debate on telling Summer about their newfound romantic status. But trouble brews for Ryan when he becomes suspicious on Oliver's well being and catches him in a compromising position involving a suspected drug dealer in the parking lot.

Season 1, Episode 16: The Links

Oliver plans a new trip for the group by inviting them to Palm Springs for the weekend to play golf and travel around. But things don't go well for everyone, except for Oliver when his erratic behavior begins showing itself to Ryan and Luke, but Marissa brushes it off as just playful behavior. But when Ryan tries to tell Marissa that Oliver is not what he appears to be, he gets left out in the cold. Summer tries to plant herself into a "friendship" with Seth and Anna leading to a competition of wills over both of them. Meanwhile in Newport, Jimmy and Sandy decide to go into business together of opening their own restaurant while Caleb and Julie return from a two-month vacation in Europe. Also, Kirsten and Hailey continue to butt heads over Hailey's irresponsible behavior leading her to finally move out of the Cohen household.

Season 1, Episode 17: The Rivals

Ryan continues to become suspicious of Oliver when he suddenly transfers to Harbor High and begins making plans of his own with Marissa. But Ryan's attempts to try to expose Oliver of the person that he is, gets met with negative approval from everyone, leading to a familiar situation. Summer shows off her new boyfriend, Danny, to Seth and Anna who correctly think that Summer is just showing off to satisfy her own ego. Meanwhile, Sandy and Jimmy prepare to sign the lease papers to build their own seafood restaurant, the Lighthouse. But Jimmy doesn't know if he's ready for this new business venture.

Season 1, Episode 18: The Truth

Ryan finds himself truly out in the cold when he's suspended from school, shunned by Marissa, and even scrutinized by the Cohens, all of whom refuse to believe Ryan's claims that that Oliver is a dangerous sociopath and obsessed with Marissa. Ironically, the only person who believes Ryan is Luke, who agrees to help Ryan make a background check on Oliver to find any dirt on him. But when Luke reveals evidence to Marissa, and then Sandy, that some of Oliver's references from his old school are false, they refuse to believe Luke, especially after learning that he's been talking with Ryan. Meanwhile, Jimmy thinks his past will impair his ability to work in the business field again. Seth continues dating Anna who thinks Summer's presence around them is not a good thing. Things come to a head when Oliver begins losing his bland, self-control to lie when Marissa comes by to his penthouse to tell him that she not interested in a relationship with him. Then, he really loses it and Marissa sees (way too late) that Ryan was right about Oliver when he holds her hostage with a gun.

On Valentine's Day, everyone is preparing for the Valentine's singles benefit dance. Luke has a new crush: that being Marissa's mother Julie. Meanwhile, Sandy gives Seth some sex advice over his dating of Summer. Theresa Diaz, an old friend Ryan's, shows up in town as part of the catering services for the benefit, which forces Marissa to lay her feelings on the table that her breakup with Ryan may have been a mistake. Also, Seth and Summer take their friendship to another level.

Ryan and Marissa begins their lives as "just friends" in the aftermath of everything that has happened. But they soon find out that it is not as easy as it looks. Things take another turn when Ryan's former flame, Theresa Diaz, show up in Newport to work as a waitress for a special gathering and wants to try to reconcile with him. Meanwhile, Julie and Luke begin having a passionate affair behind everyones backs, while Seth and Summer decide to declare their love for each other.

When Marissa and Summer run into Grady Bridges, the star of Summer's favorite TV series "The Valley", he invites them and their friends to a party in Los Angeles and they accept. Meanwhile, Ryan and Seth discover the romantic connection between Luke and Marissa's mother in which Ryan persuades Luke to break it off before Marissa finds out. During the L.A. party, Grady tries to woo Summer away from Seth, who gets an eyeful of a wealthy socialite lady, while Ryan and Marissa run into Hailey Nichol whom is now working as a stripper and they call upon Jimmy for help. Back in Newport, Sandy and Jimmy approach Caleb to ask for his help to arrange a get-together for some of Newport Group's wealthy business elite to get funds to open their own restaurant.

Season 1, Episode 23: The Nana

Sandy's overbearing and obnoxious mother, Sofia "the Nana" Cohen, arrives in Newport Beach to celebrate Passover, but she also brings not only her unattainable attitude, but some bad news that she's dying from cancer. Meanwhile, Ryan searches for Marissa who has gone missing after inadvertently learning about her mother and Luke, and Ryan finds her in the most unexpected of places: at Theresa's house in Chino. Also, Summer tries to impress the Nana by knowing the traditions of Judeaisum, while Jimmy and Hailey take a step forward with their own newfound romance.

Season 1, Episode 24: The Proposal

Jimmy and Sandy run into a roadblock in their effort to re-open the Balboa Lighthouse restaurant when some investors withdraw their funds and it's revealed that they were Jimmy's former business clients whom he lost all of their money. Meanwhile, Summer and Seth take it upon themselves to finally make Marissa feel more at home at Jimmy's apartment. Things take another when when Caleb makes a marriage proposal to Julie, which sparks anger and a feeling of betrayal for Luke who gets behind the wheel of his car and has a near-fatal accident. Also, Marissa, and Sandy and Jimmy each strike deals with Caleb in which he forces Marissa to live with him and Julie after they are married in exchange for helping Jimmy and Sandy with their business adventure.

Season 1, Episode 25: The Shower

Everyone is still reacting to the surprise engagement of Julie and Caleb. Kirsten is shocked, and a little burdened to find she's been asked to be Julie's Maid of Honor. Kirsten and Marissa end up in charge of throwing Julie's wedding shower, and Marissa invites an unwanted guest: Julie's estranged sister whom does not approve of her upcoming wedding whom she suspects that it's purely for money. Meanwhile, Theresa calls Sandy for help when she runs away from Chino and tries to avoid Ryan. Jimmy and Hailey continue their romance, and Seth awkwardly meets Summer's father. But Seth's lack of social skills make Dr. Roberts disapprove of him.

Julie and Caleb marry, and Marissa moves into their new mansion. Meanwhile Theresa asks Ryan to move to Chino with her to look after the yet to be born baby. Upon finding out about Ryan leaving, Seth decides to leave via his yacht abandoning Summer and his parents.

Season 2, Episode 1: The Distance

4 November 2004
It's been three months since Ryan left to live with the pregnant Theresa in Chino, and Seth subsequently sailed off to Portland to live with Luke and his divorced, gay father. With one week before school will start, Kirsten is furious that Sandy has yet to bring Seth back to Newport. Sandy says that they can't bring him back kicking and screaming, because that will only make him want to run away again. Also in the Cohen household, there's a group of re-modelers led by macho man Archie, creating a new family room and re-designed kitchen, a project that apparently was used to distract Kirsten from going from having two sons in the house, to none. Meanwhile, Summer tells Marissa that she's been hanging out with a new kid, but refuses to get close to him, saying she'll never get close to a boy again. Marissa knows just how she feels. She misses Ryan but just can't bring herself to call him to see how he's doing. Caleb's paranoia about being indicted is growing all summer long. Back at the Cohen household, Kirsten calls Seth in Portland and begs him to come home. Seth refuses, saying Newport is an awful place. Sandy decides to fly to Portland to possibly use reverse psychology to convince Seth to come home. He also visits Ryan in Chino to deliver him a plane ticket to Portland, thinking maybe the two could deliver an unbeatable one-two punch combination. It's apparent to everyone in Chino, including Theresa, that Ryan is miserable, and doesn't consider it to be his home anymore. Before heading up to Portland, Sandy speaks with Caleb in a parking garage, as Cal is paranoid his home, the office, and other places might be bugged and the phone lines tapped. Once in Portland, Sandy is shocked to see the level of hostility Seth shows his father. Seth seems content to stay in Portland, and continuing to resent his parents for letting Ryan go, and Ryan for leaving. Back in Newport, Jimmy and Marissa join Kirsten for dinner to keep her company, and Marissa goes into the pool house further fueling her missing Ryan. Sitting on the beach that night, she calls Ryan in Chino, but can't bring herself to say anything, so he lays there listening to her breathe, knowing it's her. Julie tells Marissa she's grounded because she's sick of being ignored. Marissa has a meltdown screaming, crying, and throwing lawn furniture into the pool unable to stand anymore of her evil mother or her evil stepfather. Summer visits the Cohen household with a box of Seth's stuff, telling Kirsten she's there to get rid of anything that ever reminded her of Seth. She dumps the box on the bed, and leaves. Later, just before Sandy leaves Portland he tells Seth that he's fine with him staying in Portland, as long as he knows he's safe and happy. As Sandy is leaving, Ryan is showing up, making his best attempt to convince Seth to go back. It doesn't seem to work until Theresa calls Ryan at Luke's house, and tells him she's lost the baby, saying the doctor couldn't find a heartbeat. Theresa's mother later reveals that Theresa was lying, and she never lost the baby. It's the next morning as Ryan is to leave that the two, Seth and Ryan, decide maybe going back to Newport would be the best thing for the both of them-and the two return to the Cohen household.

Season 2, Episode 2: The Way We Were

The boys are back. Every status is quo. Except: Summer won't kiss and make up. Ryan catches Marissa in a clinch, the DA busts Caleb, Hailey bails and the re-modelers are like a wrecking crew. Home sweet chaos.

Seth pulls off a magnanimous gesture for Summer, then blows it. Lindsay and Ryan become Physics lab partners and share some romantic chemistry. Embattled Caleb names Julie as Newport Group's CE-uh-O.

Season 2, Episode 10: The Accomplice

Hostilties heat up between Sandy and Kirsten when Sandy decides to help Max Bloom, his mentor in law school, find his daughter, Rebecca, whom was Sandy's first love. Meanwhile, Seth and Zach start up a comic book based on their lives in Newport, while Summer questions why she's been left out. Ryan makes the attempt to unite Lindsay and Caleb after Lindsay tells Ryan she is curious in getting to know her "new" father. While Julie is in Paris, Marissa looks for new ways to rebel and in doing so, her friendship with Alex increases during a trip to Los Angeles to get some of Alex's things from her former girlfriend.

After hearing about Lindsay and Ryan's failed attempt at dinner with Caleb the night before, Kirsten arranges a dinner that she can supervise. But her presence makes no difference when the hot-tempered Ryan and the egotistical Caleb immediately butt heads and disaster strikes when Caleb collapses from a sudden heart attack. Meanwhile, Sandy keeps Rebecca's presence in Newport a secret from Kirsten after deciding to take her case to court. Marissa and Alex's relationship intensifies, while Seth and Summer spend a lot of time together at Zach's insistence.

During a rainy day in Newport, Lindsay decides to take the DNA test and makes a difficult choice regarding her life with Caleb while Ryan helps her through it. Elsewhere, Sandy still wants to help Rebecca with her case and tries to convince her not to run again. But he ends up running with her and ends up stranded for the night in a run-down motel. Kirsten is still upset and confides in Julie about her problems and wishes her marriage would go back to normal and for Rebecca's case to be over with. Meanwhile, Seth thinks he's lost Summer forever until Summer is unable to hide from her feelings once and for all, when she considers leaving Newport with Zach for a trip to Europe. Marissa moves out of the Cooper-Nichol mansion and moves in with Alex after she tells her mother about Alex being her girlfriend.

Season 2, Episode 15: The Mallpisode

After Lindsay moves away to Chicago with her mother, Ryan is heartbroken and Caleb's confused. Seth, Summer, and Marissa invite Ryan to the local mall to get his mind off things. But things take another turn when they get stranded in the mall after hours. Meanwhile, Caleb tags along to vent his frustration when Sandy tries to make amends with Kirsten by searching for her wedding ring or even a grand gesture that will take her back to when Sandy first proposed. Alex begins to learn that Marissa might not be as into her as she thought. Also, Kirsten and Julie call an editor for their new magazine, Newport Living, but at the same time Julie's Riverside past catches up to her in the form of a former boyfriend with an incriminating video tape of her.

Marissa recruits Ryan to help her with Harbor School's Pep Rally Bonfire. Alex accepts that her and Marissa are from two different lives and knows she is fighting a lost cause. Meanwhile, Julie still doesn't know what she is going do about her blackmailer and seeks some advice from Sandy. Also, Kirsten wants their editor, Carter, to stick with the magazine despite his reservations.

When Ryan's brother, Trey, gets out of jail and gives Ryan a call, the Cohens give him a warm welcome. Though, Ryan knows nothing good can come from it. Zach returns from his trip to Italy and gives some news that he has a new girlfriend which makes Summer curious and Seth is not really sure what to think. Meanwhile, after Julie admits her naked mistake to Kirsten, they both agree to get Caleb in on it for more help, unaware that Caleb as always, has a hidden agenda. Also, the Newport Living magazine is officially launched, but Julie's blackmailer, Lance, makes an appearance after Caleb had stiffed him for his blackmail money.

Sandy reluctantly agrees with Kirsten to serve as host/auctioneer at yet another OC benefit. Meanwhile, Trey lies to Ryan to prove that he can be self-dependent when he steals one auction exhibit leading Ryan and Seth on a mission to recover it before anyone finds out. Carter reinvigorates Seth and Zach's comic book dream, much to the annoyance of Summer. Also, Marissa moves in with the Cohens, unwilling to stand anymore of living with Julie or Caleb.

On Trey's 21st birthday, Marissa, anxious to help Trey and Ryan forge a relationship, throws a birthday party for Trey at the Cooper-Nichol mansion that turns out to be a rumble when one girl nearly drowns from a drug OD. Meanwhile, Seth is left in hot water by both Summer and Zach. Sandy wants to continue his friendship with Carter, leaving a confused Kirsten. Also, a distraught Julie shares some memories with her blackmailer Lance, and in the process learns a few things and gains a few ideas about the future of her marriage to Caleb.

Marissa struggles with attending new public high school Newport Union, and her new friends, Johnny; his girlfriend Cassey; and their nerd friend Chili, all of whom make Ryan slightly jealous. Meanwhile, Charlotte's ruse is up when she learns that Kirsten did not inherit any money from Caleb. But Charlotte's con-artist boyfriend, Glen, forces her to go ahead with their scam to rip off Kristen anyway. Julie's mansion get repossessed, leaving her with nothing but a broken heart. Also, Taylor sets into motion a crafty power play in planning Harbor High's Homecoming Dance in which she successfully dethrones Summer as the school committee chairman by tricking her into admitting to Dean Hess a misdeed with Seth. Later, Summer learns an interesting secret about Taylor and Dean Hess and why he is going around punishing and suspending everyone that Taylor dislikes...

Season 3, Episode 5: The Perfect Storm

3 November 2005
Ryan decides to not return to school, and makes a decision to take a job as a fisherman which Sandy reluctantly accepts. Marissa turns to her new friends, Johnny, Casey, and Chili, to help her with Ryan's situation when he tells her that he's leaving down on a fishing trawler for a few months at sea. Meanwhile, Summer and Seth team up to try to reveal the romantic tryst between the nasty Dean Hess and conniving Taylor. When Sandy learns about this, he uses his legal skills and poker-face tactics to play hardball with Dean Hess to let Ryan back at Harbor High, while Seth and Summer confront Taylor. Also, Charlotte finds out about Julie's downfall (now living at a flea-bag motel) and uses this to recruit her as her co-conspirator to plan another scam to try to rip off Kirsten and the Newport community.

Season 3, Episode 6: The Swells

10 November 2005
Marissa continues to hang out at the beach to watch Johnny's surfing skills, where she discovers some secrets about Johnny that Ryan lacks; about being involved in a shooting years back. But Casey becomes jealous about Marissa hanging out with Johnny, and seeks some companionship with Johnny's rival, a vicious gang member and rival surfer named Kevin Volchok. Meanwhile, Charlotte convinces Kirsten to help her and Julie throw a charity event while Charlotte plot to steal all the donations and skip town. But when Julie discovers Charlotte's scam and her plot to frame Julie for the event, Julie then has a change of heart and threatens Charlotte to not go through with it. Summer and Seth learn more about Taylor and the reasons for her behavior which stems from her unhappy and lonely home life during planning for a Harbor High's weekend lock-in. There, Taylor takes advantage of Summer's absence (who's helping Ryan deal with Marissa and Johnny) to makes the moves on Seth. Also, Sandy plans to sell the Newport Group. But his plans change when an ambitious young executive, named Matt Ramsey, persuades Sandy to keep the company open and offers to come on board to help out.

Season 3, Episode 7: The Anger Management

17 November 2005
While the gang makes plans to go to the the Bait Shop to see the band, The Subways perform, Taylor's continuing meddling with wooing Seth causes a major rift between him and Summer. Marissa, determined to end the potentially explosive rift between Ryan and the vicious, violent-tempered Volchok, does whatever it takes to watch out for Ryan to make sure he does not fall back into his old ways. Meanwhile, Matt Ramsey, Sandy's new Newport Group partner, goes above and beyond the call of duty when he learns he has to cut Newport Group staff. Also, Charlotte's plan to rip off Kirsten finally commences when the fund raiser is finally head, while Julie, having a change of heart, tries to prevent Charlotte from carrying out the scam after figuring out that Charlotte plans to skip town with all the money and frame Julie for the crime.

Season 3, Episode 8: The Game Plan

Ryan, Summer, Seth, and Marissa think about what they'd like to do with their lives as they compile their college applications, but they run across several obstacles. Seth decides against going to Berkley in San Francisco, and decides on Brown University, but cannot bring himself to tell his father. Summer wants to attend a college in Arizona, but when she sees Seth wants to move to a college back east, she decides to attend, only to run into Taylor whom takes the sole remaining application to Brown. Ryan does not know where he might go to college, while Marissa is persuaded to attend despite knowing her bad reputation. Meanwhile, Johnny's surfing career takes an unfortunate twist when he gets hit by a moving car in a parking lot, and the doctor's diagnosis is that he may not be able to surf again to his injured left leg. Also, Julie finally reveals to Kirsten the secret about the departed Charlotte when she's finally evicted from Charlotte's townhouse and is forced to move into a wretched trailer park.

Season 3, Episode 9: The Disconnect

Marissa visits Johnny at his house after his accident to see how he is doing and meets his friendly nurse mother Gwen where she tries to help Johnny get an operation for his leg injury, but they cannot afford the high medical costs. Elsewhere, Summer and Seth try to join school extracurricular activities as part of their personal quests to be different. Meanwhile, Julie and Kirsten get a contract for their new catering business where Julie latches onto a potential client. Also, Ryan learns more about Matt Ramsey when he tags along with him and Sandy when they meet with investors for Newport Group, and covers for Matt when he slacks off during a night on the town.

Trouble brews for the gang when Marissa's younger sister, Kaitlin Cooper (whom is even more devious and amoral then Julie), arrives in Newport for a visit from her Montecito boarding school. Julie is finally forced to tell the truth about her living condition to Kaitlin and Marissa. Within a matter of hours, Kaitlin has hit upon Johnny and tries to get him and Marissa together despite knowing that she's still dating Ryan. Soon, some of Kaitlin's problems follow her to Newport involving her drug-dealing boyfriend Justin, and she fibs a lot to Ryan and Marissa about her problems. Meanwhile, Kirsten and Julie decide to start their own dating service, but the evil Veronica Townsend brings more trouble when she blackmails them to get her up on a date with Summer's father. Johnny, frustrated that he will not be able to go on a surfing tour, beings to distance himself from Marissa.

While Marissa does all she can to get to know Kaitlin better, she just stirs up more trouble for the gang as she prepares to celebrate her 15th birthday. Meanwhile, Sandy encourages Seth about college, but Seth finds a better alternative, thanks to Kaitlin. Sandy and Matt work together to secure a contract for Newport's new hospital. Also, Julie continues her quest to put her family back together again by trowing a birthday party at Dr. Roberts house.

Summer discovers the truth about Seth's pot smoking, while Sandy and Matt encounter an obstacle with their hospital project. Meanwhile, Kirsten and Julie take their matchmaking business a little too far, causing Julie to go into hiding. Marissa finally tells Johnny how she truly feels and Kaitlin wonders which "Cooper" Johnny really likes. When Johnny and Kaitlin head to the beach for some partying and drinking, Johnny loses it and finds himself at the edge of reason, and of a 100-foot cliff.

In the aftermath of Johnny's untimely death, the gang tries to sort out their problems and face the reality of the situation. Johnny's cousin, Sadie Campbell, arrives in Newport for the funeral. Ryan helps her move into Johnny's house and they to try to get rid of the nasty Kevin Volchok, causing Ryan to question his relationship with Marissa. Meanwhile, Kaitlin's winter break is over, meaning that she must return to her boarding school, just as she gets close to her family. Kaitlin has mixed feelings about going back to school with Justin, but also leaving the trailer park where they live. And in the wake of Newport's latest events, Kirsten and Julie press on with their Valentine's Day party where Sandy and Seth get their Valentine's Day gifts for Kirsten and Summer mixed up. Dr. Roberts professes his love for Julie, while Sandy and Kirsten continue to help Matt work out his arranged relationship with Maya.

Season 3, Episode 16: The Road Warrior

Summer asks Julie and Kirsten, via their matchmaking company, to find a woman for her father. However, the pesky Taylor discovers Julie and Dr. Roberts having dinner, and she naturally tells Summer and Seth, who learn about the romantic attraction between Julie and Summer's father. Meanwhile, Ryan goes on a road trip to help Sadie find her trouble-ridden Uncle Jack, Johnny's father, to collect some late child support payments. Marissa is yet again involved in another police investigation involving Johnny's death, and she and Ryan break up, leading to Volchok to make the moves on her. Also, Matt continues dating Maya in order to influence her father to give more funding for their hospital, while Kirsten begins to think Sandy is being corrupted by his business deals with Matt over Maya.

Season 3, Episode 17: The Journey

It's Ryan's 18th b-day and the Cohens decide to throw him a party at the Bait shop. Ryan wonders about if he should invite Marissa or not, trying not to give her the wrong idea. Meanwhile, Summer confronts Julie about her knowing Julie and Dr.Roberts' fling. Julie then confronts Marissa about it, and surprisingly Marissa is OK with it. While Marissa tries to get over her break-up with Ryan, Kevin Volchek seems to keep being in the way, and Matt has to rescue her from Volchek's attempt for a talk.Ryan and Sadie gets closer. Marissa looks for Volchek to apologize to him, and comes by the old house that her and Ryan spent a night in. Marissa falls down the stairs and Volchek is there to rescue her. Volchek gets closer to Marissa; and they talk a lot, Marissa gets invited to Ryan's party, but she decides not to go and heads to the beach instead. There she runs into Volchek, and they spend the night at the beach; together. Ryan's birthday goes well; The episode ends with Ryan and Sadie dancing at Ryan's party, and Summer and Seth dancing together, and Marissa and Volchek at the beach, with Marissa leaning over Volchek's shoulder .. you know what that means -- dunh dunh dunh!!! :)

Season 3, Episode 18: The Undertow

Ryan has problems opening up to Sadie about his problems, which takes a turn when Jess Sathes, Trey's former self-destructive girlfriend, returns and asks Ryan for help to get rid of a possessive boyfriend of hers, as well as to talk about where Trey is currently. Meanwhile, Henry Griffin drops by the Newport Group to talk to Sandy about his problem with keeping Matt on the team after learning of his breakup with Maya. Taylor helps Seth and Summer deal with their couple problems by tricking them into meeting together to talk. Also, Marissa shows weakness towards Volchok, and one thing leads to another leading to Marissa to fall back into her old habits.

Season 3, Episode 19: The Secrets and Lies

Julie and Dr. Roberts return from their cruise at sea and announce their engagement, leading to fireworks from both Summer and Marissa when Julie moves out of her trailer and into Dr. Roberts' house. Meanwhile, Marissa seeks solace with Volchok and his bad company surfer friends which causes a riff between her and Summer. Ryan tries to move on by dating Sadie, but finds himself not over Marissa. Seeing the specter of Marissa hanging over Ryan, Sadie decides to leave Newport to move back to Portland without saying goodbye to Ryan. Kirsten surprises Seth with a night out to an AA meeting, and Sandy's woes with Matt continue when Henry Griffin continues to insist that Sandy fire Matt from Newport Group for dating his daughter. But this leads to Matt getting beat up after unwisely trying to blackmail Mr. Griffin about some less-than-legal business dealings he's in.

Season 3, Episode 20: The Day After Tomorrow

When college acceptance and rejection letters are received, the kids must consider what path they are going to follow. Summer is accepted into Brown University, whereas Seth is not. Not wanting to hold back Summer from such an grand opportunity, Seth lies by telling Summer and everyone that he got accepted into Brown, and begins to treat Summer badly. Ryan and Sadie try to decide what Ryan will do after high school when he is accepted into Berkeley. Marissa is also accepted into Berkely, but does not know if she wants to leave Newport. Meanwhile, Sandy tries to resolve the conflict between the unscrupulous, and mob-connected Henry Griffin and the hotshot Matt, where Mr. Griffin tries to bribe Sandy into not filing charges against him. Accepted to a college in France, a joyful Taylor holds a college acceptance bonfire party where Summer and Marissa try to fix their friendship problems, and Sadie decides not to move to Berkey with Ryan after seeing that it will hold him back and she leaves for Portland, for good.

During planning for Harbor High's senior prom, Seth tries to convince Summer to accompany him. But she is still mad at him over the Anna Stern incident at Brown and refuses to listen to any explanation. Taylor arranges a date for Summer with the rock star Big Korea, the cousin of Taylor's Korean boyfriend Ho. Therefore, Seth's date for the prom is the visiting Anna, who gives him advice on how he can win back Summer. Ryan's date is Theresa, who tries to explain why she lied to him two years ago about having a miscarriage, while Marissa's date is Volchok, who causes a lot of trouble and by that raises Ryan's anger level, because he still feels responsible for Marissa.

Season 3, Episode 24: The Man of the Year

Sandy is voted "Man of the Year" by Riviera magazine due to his work for the hospital, but at the same time is having some trouble with the law for his connections to Henry Griffin when Mr. Griffin's mob connections are made public. Although Seth is happily back together with Summer, he is not out of sorrow: His mom struggles with alcoholism again and Sandy finds out that Seth lied about being accepted into Brown University. Meanwhile, Marissa visits Kaitlin at her posh boarding school, who needs her help to get out of trouble with another student. After Ryan brought Volchok to the hospital after he nearly and inadvertently tried to kill him, Volchok wants Ryan to help him with some illegal activities; which includes some burglary and the theft of a car, otherwise he will bust Ryan to the cops.

During the last days of summer before college, Seth is working at a comic book store in Newport. Ryan has problems dealing with the issues of the past and pushes himself with his new job. Kirsten is preparing Ryan a "care package" but neither she nor Seth can persuade Ryan to come home since he moved out after Marissa's sudden death. At Brown University, Summer settles into her new dorm room with new friend and roommate Che,who's an activist who wants to rally the students for a protest. Taylor phones Summer from the Sorbonne in Paris to ask about her current living status.

When Ryan and Taylor have an argument over where they stand with their whatever relationship they have, they both fall off a ladder while Ryan is putting up Christmas lights and both wake up in a alternate reality of what life is like had Ryan never came to Newport: Sandy is the uptight mayor of Newport Beach and married to Julie Cooper; Kirsten is married to Jimmy Cooper; Seth is still a socially awkward geek and Summer is a mindless, narcissistic party animal who is engaged to Chester "Che" Winchester, whom is having a fling with the sex-addict Julie. Ryan also learns from Kaitlin that Marissia in fact died from a drug overdose three years prior during the road trip to Tijuana, and Ryan was not there to save her. Back in the real world, Seth tries to arrange his annual Christmukka party and then tries to move it to the hospital where the comatose Ryan and Taylor are. Also, Julie and Katilin are planning to go to Riverside to visit Julie's parents, but get detoured when they try to stop Taylor's insensitive mother from leaving town for the holidays.

Ryan has a New Year's Eve surprise for semi-girl-friend Taylor, a trip to Las Vegas, while she went for sexy lingerie. Spoiled, moody Summer rages at 'immature' Seth for having made no particular festive plans; after encouragement from dad, who has urgent court business himself, his plan B is to beg eternal last resort Ryan to take them along, promising to pay for the best room Cohen money can buy. Just before the trip, Taylor begins to wonder whether Summer may be pregnant from her recent trysts with Seth, while he discovers the home pregnancy test in Taylor's purse and jumps to the wrong conclusion, while panicking Taylor pretends to Ryan she's the mother-to-be. Things take another turn for the worse when Taylor's purse is stolen and the four of them end up at a rave populated by people dressed up as aliens to search for the purse snatcher. Back in Newport, Gordon Bullitt invites reluctant Julie to his New Year's Eve Blast Off party, while a mysterious man there, who calls himself Frank, may cause some trouble with Julie over her and Kirsten's dating service New Match, the illegal 'escort' branch of which she agreed with her partner, Gordon's studly son Spencer, to shut down but only after making $40,000 from the festive clientèle. Meanwhile, bored Kaitlyn Cooper ponders her well being.

Season 4, Episode 9: The My Two Dads

After Kaitlin presents a ruffled history to her class, she ends up getting assigned a tutor: a socially awkward school band member named Will Tutt. Meanwhile, Summer and Seth resume with their recent commitment to get married, despite how the two really feel about it. Julie tells Kirsten of the true identity of Frank that he happens to be Ryan's father just out of prison, while Sandy questions Frank's motives in Newport. When Sandy invites Frank over for dinner at their house, things don't go as well as presumed.

Season 4, Episode 10: The French Connection

Ryan and Taylor experience a bump in their blossoming relationship when Taylor's French ex-husband, Henri-Michel, comes to Newport to promote a novel that he has written about his and Taylor's whirlwind romance and brief marriage. Meanwhile, Seth goes to Seattle for Dr. Roberts' blessing to marry Summer, while back in Newport, Summer becomes acquainted with former school mate Holly Fisher, who's now married herself, and shows Summer the style of that it's like to be a "Newpsie" housewife. Kirsten becomes suspicious about Julie's handling of their dating service and finally learns the truth after sealing Julie's mobile phone with her clients names and phone numbers on it. Also, Kaitlin finds an interest in her personal tutor, Will. But she's afraid of what he thinks of her.

Season 4, Episode 11: The Dream Lover

Kirsten must clean up after Julie when one of the men she hooked someone with has an unpleasant "medical condition." Meanwhile, Will Tutt introduces Kaitlin to his fellow school band members Lucy, Jane, and Rachel during a bake sale at Harbor High to raise money to get new uniforms. But Kaitlin does not get along at all with Will's band mates because of her cynicism and insensitivity. Ryan tries writing a love poem for Taylor when Henri-Michel announces that he plans on staying in Newport for a while. Also, Che arrives back in town and takes Seth on a 'spiritual retreat' in the hills for Seth to see his path on where he stands with Summer.

Season 4, Episode 12: The Groundhog Day

Seth and Che get in some trouble with the police when Che drags Seth into helping him try to free a groundhog before Newport's annual Groundhog Day festival. Meanwhile, Kirsten gets some life altering news and Taylor gets some extra help from a therapist to make things different with Ryan.

Seth and Summer come upon a fortune teller whose prediction makes the two question whether they are truly meant for each other. Ryan gets back in touch with his father (with a little help from Taylor). When the two teens discover a love connection between Frank and Julie despite her pending engagement, a Valentine's competition is sparked between "Team Bullit" and "Team Frank". Meanwhile, with a new baby on the way, Kirsten finds herself dwelling on an old secret involving Jimmy Cooper.

On Taylor's 19th birthday she hopes Ryan will say he loves her but is unsure whether she should tell him she got into Berkely as well. Meanwhile, Summer tells Seth that she feels that he should find something in his life that he really cares about, whereas Kirsten is having second thoughts about raising another child in the uptight community of Newport after she meets Holly Fisher and other 'Newpsie' women at a yoga class, all of whom are no older than their 20s. Also, Kaitlin continues to resent Frank Atwood's presence around the house with her mother. But at the end, something unexpected happens even though it's been predicted.

Season 4, Episode 15: The Night Moves

In the immediate aftermath of a violent earthquake that rocks Newport, everyone tries to struggle to stay together and keep their spirits up. Sandy and Kristen are stranded at the local shopping center where Kristen has an accident. Across town, Julie and Kailin are stranded in a demolished ice cream parlor on the pier with a pitiful worker of the place. Meanwhile, Ryan is seriously wounded with a piece of glass in his side, but keeps the news from Taylor to avoid panicking her. Seth soon learns of Ryan's condition and attempts to drive him to safety while Summer and Taylor search the ruins of the Roberts house for Summer's missing rabbit, leading to Taylor having a confrontation with her mother.

Season 4, Episode 16: The End's Not Near, It's Here

22 February 2007
Six months after the trauma of the Newport earthquake, Ryan and the rest of the Cohens struggle with their living arrangements in the aftermath of the destruction of their house. Both Ryan and Taylor struggle with their feelings for each other despite knowing that they have nothing in common. Seth feels he's keeping Summer back from her activist work programs, but does not want to let go of her. Meanwhile, Julie, whom is now three months pregnant herself, is planning her upcoming wedding to Gordon Bullit, but Kaitlin realizes that she is not over Frank Atwood. Seth and Ryan visit the old house that Sandy and Kirsten lived in before there move to Newport Beach. When they pressure Sandy and Kirsten to visit their old house, where a gay couple now resides there, Kirsten happens to go into labor, and soon, Julie's wedding becomes the scene of the place.
