The subtle trick Showtime's "Penny Dreadful is that it is far less about the blood, gore and the specter of gruesome death than the sharp pain and exhilarating pleasure of living, and the terror of feeling alone even in close company. Read our review in the May Picks section.
From Wil Anderson's antics about waking up early ("I've never woken up at six am to see the best part of the day... say, Avril Lagvine beaten to death, using only Christina Aguliera!") to Greg Fleet's story about LSD ("If we don't start walking. We will die."), this is a great thing to rent or buy to laugh at when you're feeling a little bit down. A marvelous bunch of comedians which included Sabrina Matthews, Tom Gleeson, Judith Lucy, Ahn Do and a flock of others, you'll laugh till your sides split! "I do breakfast radio so I get up really early. I get up at quarter to four in the morning, which isn't even morning. It's the middle of last night! So I'm on holidays and all I want to do is sleep in. I was at my mothers, my mother (who's meant to love me!) comes in at six am, and started shaking me saying 'Wake up! Wake up! You're missing the best part of the day!' only to be told: 'P*SS OFF! P*ss off or you'll be missing the best part of your face!' I'm sorry. Six am is not the best part of the day. I have never woken up at six am to see the best part of the day, say, Arvil Lagvine being beaten to death, using only Christina Aguleira! What is with Christina anyway? She's Dirrrty! 'I'm so Dirrrty!' The mayor of Skanky Ho Town!" ~ Wil Anderson.
