Renewals, Pickups and Cancellations Roundup for ABC, NBC, CW and AMC

11 May 2012 7:09 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Dozens of shows learned their fate this week so we’re going to run down the latest as they came in on Friday evening. The headline news included series such as Nikita, Happy Endings, Parks & Rec, Body of Proof, and yes, even Whitney being renewed while NBC’s Awake and Harry’s Law were not.

Make note of how many 13-episode seasons were ordered. The thinking may be that the networks are learning that the cable model does work better, because it 1) allows more shows to be added to the lineup and 2) keeps the interest going through the fall instead of trying to carry the momentum through the holiday breaks. That doesn’t give fans many episodes to be excited about, but in the case of Community, any word of renewal, regardless of number was good news.

Networks could also be thinking the strategy behind 13-episode seasons could be to »

NBC Renews Whitney, Picks Up Dane Cook Comedy

NBC Renews Whitney, Picks Up Dane Cook Comedy

NBC has given a second season order to Whitney, the eponymous comedy from stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings. Though it may have been critically ignored/reviled, the show had a pretty steady fanbase, thriving in a move from the post-Office slot to leading off Wednesday nights. The most logical pairing for the show would be the only multi-cam that NBC ordered to series - Guys with Kids, starring Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Tempestt Bledsoe, Anthony Anderson, and Jesse Bradford. The network had several other multi-cams in development, including a sitcom from Roseanne, but they failed to pick anything else up.

NBC has also picked up a final comedy pilot in Next Caller, starring Dane Cook as a radio host for a relationship-themed call-in show. Deadline is reporting that the show, which features Collette Wolfe, Joy Osmanski, and Ryan Devlin, is being considered for midseason and »

Robert Altman's 'The Player': What Lessons Hollywood Has Learned From The Showbiz Satire

13 April 2012 5:02 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Released 20 years ago this week , "The Player" seemed at the time like one of the most merciless lampoons of Hollywood ever made, but director Robert Altman liked to insist that it was "a very mild satire." He meant that it could have been even meaner if he'd made it more realistic. Altman was working from Michael Tolkin's screenplay, adapted from Tolkin's own novel, but the observations it made about the movie industry's contempt for art and artists were clearly informed by Altman's own decades of frustration as a creative filmmaker with a singular, idiosyncratic vision who repeatedly clashed with executives interested only in profit. Judging by how many Hollywood A-listers he got to do free cameos in the movie -- about five dozen of them -- a lot of the industry's top talent must have felt as he did. So did critics and audiences, who helped make the movie »

The Biz: Will These Shows Sink or Swim?

6 February 2012 6:50 PM, PST | TVGuide - Breaking News | See recent TVGuide - Breaking News news »

As mid-season shows debut over the next three months, it will be crunch time for a number of series that haven't been tearing up the Nielsen charts. Here's what network insiders say are the shows on the bubble as execs look to set their schedules in May.

ABC

A second-year ratings fade may mean it's time to pull a sheet over the Dana Delany-led Body of Proof. While the network ordered an extra episode of Pan Am in order to keep a hold on the cast until May, its chances of returning next fall are as likely as an airport going a full day without a flight delay. Comedy Happy Endings doesn't do a great job retaining the lead-in from the mighty Modern Family, but ABC parent Disney has an ownership stake in the show and it's a favorite within the network's entertainment division — so a pickup for another season is considered a lock. »

‘Sarah Marshall’ Director To Write Sitcom

19 January 2012 9:32 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Nicholas Stoller, director of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and pal of Jason Segel, is currently working on a sitcom pilot for CBS. Though the project is still in its infancy, the show will apparently be somewhat autobiographical, focussing on a guy whose messy breakup is complicated when he discovers that his ex is his new co-worker. Stoller is currently married, so it’s safe to assume he didn’t break up with a girl who turned out to be operating one of the muppets.

America has something of a surplus of high quality comedies at the moment, with the likes of Parks And Recreation, Community (come back soon!) and 30 Rock on NBC,  Happy Endings on ABC, big recent hit New Girl and cult favourite Raising Hope on Fox, and the past-its-peak-but-often-still-good How I Met Your Mother on CBS. Mother, in particular, has proven to be extremely popular, with probably the most »

TV Ratings Report: American Idol Wins, Plummets

19 January 2012 9:11 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Note for the rest of the TV season: American Idol will win in total viewers every single night it airs.

That was easily the case on Wednesday, as the season 11 premiere drew 21.6 million households... but it's not all good news for Fox: the premiere was down 27% from last year's opener. That's quite the drop-off, though not unexpected for a show that's been on for so many seasons and which now faces competition from other singing competitions.

'American Idol' premiere ratings: Biggest drop ever

Updated: The Idol has landed.

The 11th season debut of Fox’s American Idol had the biggest year-over-year ratings drop for a premiere episode in the show’s decade-long history. Idol delivered 21.9 million viewers and a 7.4 in the adult demo on Wednesday night, according to Fox’s time-zone-adjusted national ratings. That’s down 24 percent from last year.

The reality veteran still easily won the night (with Fox outperforming all its rivals combined) and the show will almost certainly rank as this week’s top-rated entertainment program. Still, the decline is a disappointment for Fox, though not entirely unexpected.
