Storyline

The last thread of the Great tradition of Indian Classical Music, Pandit Shivshankar Shastri (Girish Karnad), is worried about whom to shoulder the responsibility - It's the quest of a great musical mind to find his true prodigy! Through his riyaz of a life time, he has come to the very core of the musical God - Param shiva. He's the embodiment of music. The notes & rhythm talks to him. (naad chhipa tan mein, laya man mein). Due to the ignorance of the masses - Classical music is becoming mis-interpreted & being ignored. He had his share of great respect & great concerts, but it's slowly dying, and not for himself but to keep the tradition live - he's ready to teach the art to a select few, but no one comes his way. When Tulsi (Jayaprada) who knows his greatness, but drifted away in life due to circumstances, sends her son to learn from shastriji. The son absorbs all he can & becomes his true prodigy at the end of the movie. The Music by LP is simply ahead of times, and a true ... Written by SanjeevSonar sanjeev.sonar@gmail.com

Sur Sangam, musical tearjerker
22 January 2006 | by (India) – See all my reviews

This 1985 movie from K.Vishwanath would be remembered for some good performances and melodious classical music from Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Though Girish Karnad was misfit for the role of a music maestro, Jaya Prada did commendable job. But the small cameo of Sachin was really good. The highlight of the film was the music by LP. The songs sung by the great Mishra Brothers Rajan and Sajan, haunt you out of the theater. Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Anuradha Paudwal, S. Janaki all lend able support to the classical music masters. The use of pure ragas like Bhairav, Chandrakauns etc. make you crave for more. The directorial touches like the music record playing a song during the rape on the heroine, though typically symbolic and attributable to the 1960's films, still is likable. The songs like Aayo prabhat sab mil gao, Jaau tore charan kamal per wari, Dhanya bhag sevaka ausar paya etc are rare gems. People may compare it to Shankarabharanam from South but that according to me is unfair. The era was of Himmatwala and likes. It was no wonder the film therefore bombed at the box office. But can anybody let me know why the music CD, VCD or DVD of this film is not available?
