With a couple more days left in this year's EFM our friends at FilmSharks have let us know about more deals they've secured in their time there. Two titles we've spoken about in recent months the other is the return of a classic Argentine thriller with a 4K restoration. Look back in our pages for articles about Boogeyman and The Restless Waters. What's new to us is the 4K restoration of Fabian Bielinsky's (The Aura) 2000 thriller, Nine Queens. It was his debut feature film and was heavily lauded as one of the best thrillers of its time. Sadly, Bielinsky died from a heart attack one year after his second film, The Aura, premiered to equal acclaim. His second film was a favorite of mine...

In the wake of last year’s Emmy winning spinoff movie Prey, Deadline reports today that director Dan Trachtenberg will be expanding upon the Predator franchise even further with the upcoming Badlands, another standalone Predator movie!
Trachtenberg is on board to write and direct Badlands.
Deadline reports, “The film is a high priority for the studio and sources say Trachtenberg and execs are already meeting with talent for the lead role.”
The site’s report continues, “Plot details are being kept under wraps other than it featuring everyone’s favorite extraterrestrial big game hunter. It is also not known about release plans as the last film exclusively streamed on Hulu (breaking numerous viewerships records for the streamer) but given that 20th Century has been very much back in the theatrical game with films like Boogeyman and the upcoming Alien: Romulus film bowing in theaters, a theatrical premiere isn’t out of the question.

Star Wars is one of the most iconic movie and TV franchises and has experienced continual growth over the past decades. Initially created by George Lucas, the new Star Wars content upholds his legacy through the genius storytelling and cinematic experiences that producers such as Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau offer on-screen. As the release of Star Wars TV shows becomes more and more frequent, it makes it harder to fully appreciate every single detail that these series have to offer.
Actors playing the more prominent roles in the Star Wars TV shows, such as Pedro Pascal and Ewan Gordon McGregor, often take away from the less-relevant characters. There are, therefore, a multitude of brilliant actors who are forgotten in the Star Wars TV shows. From Neil Patrick Harris to Liam Neeson, Star Wars has a lot of talent to offer.

The Boogeyman is yet another Stephen King adaptation, reframing the 1973 short story as an extended exploration of grief -- while still being plenty horrifying. Still reeling from the death of their mother, Sadie and Sawyer struggle to get their therapist father Will to acknowledge his own pain. But they find themselves forced together if they have any chance of surviving a mysterious and monstrous force lurking in the shadows.
As much a character study as a creature feature, The Boogeyman excels when it leans into its grounded elements -- which makes sense given that the filmmakers behind-the-scenes were keenly focused on finding that balance. During an interview with Cbr now that The Boogeyman is available on DVD and Blu-ray, the film's director Rob Savage discussed the interplay between grief and terror, the importance of improvisation, and carrying on the Stephen King legacy.

The Boogeyman still stands as one of my favorite horror films of the year. It’s a classic tale anchored by some phenomenal performances from both Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Blair. But it’s really the technical side that impresses the most, with its interesting usage of light and fantastic cinematography. So I couldn’t have been more grateful to pick director Rob Savage’s brain about all things Boogeyman. He couldn’t have been nicer, giving great insight into some of the best scenes of the movie. We talked about the possibility of a sequel (and who I want to see get their comeuppance), as well as Disney’s refusal of the usage of a toy lightsaber ended up being a blessing in disguise. This was a great chat that you won’t want to miss!

Rob Savage makes scary movies.
After smashing his way into the horror scene with the pandemic chiller "Host" and the divisive horror comedy "Dashcam," Savage made his first major studio movie earlier this year with "The Boogeyman," an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name. And while it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the most exciting aspect of the film was that it proved Savage could take on a much bigger movie without losing his edge. This is a frightening film, one coated in dread and literal darkness, with a story just as interested in its shattered characters as its unsettling monster. Some horror directors abandon their spark when they work on a bigger, more expensive studio project. It looks like Savage thrives.

The Boogeyman is a horror film that follows the Harper family as they deal with the loss of their mother and the arrival of a demonic entity that feeds on their suffering. Since the first Saw movie's release in 2004, actor Tobin Bell has been the face of the popular horror franchise, starring as the series' main villain, John Kramer, who is better known by his murderous moniker Jigsaw. Although the original Jigsaw is only the antagonist of the first three movies, as well as 2017's prequel Jigsaw, with his devoted accomplices taking over his "games" after his death in Saw III, the presence of Kramer and, more importantly, actor Tobin Bell have pervaded the entirety of the Saw series (excluding Spiral from 2021). And with Jigsaw and Bell's long-awaited return in Saw X, it may be challenging to comprehend that Bell has had roles other than the meticulously malicious Kramer. Fortunately, for horror fans who cannot bear to see their favorite villain in something other than a horror flick, there is 2007's Boogeyman 2, which has Bell being a bad guy.

Four (an unusually high number) recent studio theatrical releases added PVOD home availability over the last week. No question which among them scored best — “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney) took the #1 slot on all charts.
Consumer options vary among the titles. “Indiana Jones” can immediately be digitally downloaded for $19.99. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” (Paramount) is $19.99 for a 48 hour rental, as is “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” (Universal). “Mutant” can be purchased for $24.99. Meanwhile, Disney released “The Boogeyman” at a $14.99 initial rental price.
The rush to open could be related to two factors — holiday viewing, but also the anticipated (but not yet confirmed) release of “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) as early as Tuesday. Presales are available on multiple sites, but none yet list a specific date.

Warning: This post contains mild spoilers for The Boogeyman
The PG-13 rating of "The Boogeyman" makes it more accessible to a wider audience, appealing to those seeking a horror film without the explicit content of an R-rating. The film contains scary elements centered around the terrifying nature of the titular creature, including stalking, attacking, and killing its prey. While the film's language is relatively tame, it includes scenes with violence and intense brutality that are not suitable for younger children.
When it comes to horror films, there is an expectation that it will be rated R. After all, strong language, a good amount of gore, and general violence tend to make up the core of the horror genre’s biggest and most notable films. But while there are plenty of horror movies that are given the R-rating by the Motion Picture Association of America, there are several films within the same genre,...

Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” hit shelves in 1897, and in that time there have been so many iterations of the famous vampire that to watch them all would take a lifetime. And yet filmmakers continuously try to find new ways in to a story so well-worn it’s leather. Such is the case with André Øvredal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which touts itself as Dracula’s origin story (which it really isn’t if you read the beginning and middle of Stoker’s book).

The Ouija board, and that’s weejee board not weeja board with all due respect to Joe Bob Briggs, has been a constant source of fascination since it’s inception in 1890. Ghostly movements and other supernatural appearances went back further than that and there were crude inceptions before 1890 but that’s when the board as we know it came about. We’ve had a couple of tentpole missteps here this summer, read Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny this weekend with $60M, The Flash and Elemental; putting the running summer box office at $1.88 billion for May 1-July 2.
That’s close to -2% off from the $1.91 billion reached over the same frame last year. All these figures come from Comscore.
While the pacing isn’t terrible, the overall industry always likes to exceed year-over-year, especially after that disastrous pandemic which forced theaters to close in 2020-through early March 2021. Summer 2020 for the May 1-July 2 period only grossed $47.3M.
Next to the pre-pandemic summer 2019 which was on Viagra and steroids led by Disney/Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame (delivering $416.7M for that May 1-July 2 play period), summer 2023 is 17% behind that mid-summer which accumulated $2.27 billion.

On a weekend like this one it’s easy to bury the positive news, so let’s start with the good stuff.
Three non-franchise original films, all budgeted under $50 million, saw credible results. Sony’s “No Hard Feelings” with Jennifer Lawrence, an R-rated comedy, did around 25 percent better than pre-release estimates. Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” (Focus) proved its opening platform weekend was no fluke with $9 million. And Celine Song’s “Past Lives” (A24), rolling out more slowly, is already at $3.5 million while in fewer than 300 theaters.
Add to those the continued strong performance of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony), which is back at #1 and headed to a $375 million-$400 million domestic total (double 2018’s initial entry). Pixar’s “Elemental” saw a credible hold (-38 percent) to retain the #2 position. And “The Little Mermaid,” falling only 22 percent, is at $270 million domestic, while Disney’s “Boogeyman” (its fourth top 10 title) fell only 40 percent.

Stephen King's latest movie adaptation, The Boogeyman, has been reminding audiences to be very wary of any closet doors that are slightly ajar. First published in 1973 and later incorporated into King's 1978 short story collection Night Shift, the story posits the idea that an evil entity lives inside a bedroom closet and kills unsuspecting children during the night. Now, this idea of the Boogeyman is nothing new. This nocturnal supernatural being has been part of folklore for ages; a monstrous threat used to frighten naughty children into behaving nicely lest they be taken from their beds by the Boogeyman. However, King's original story and its 2023 movie adaptation have used this mythical monster's lore and modified it to tell a unique story.
Back in 2005, a horror movie titled Boogeyman also attempted to incorporate a creative twist on the idea of the creature in the closet. Having its story written by Eric Kripke,...

The Boogeyman, the newest feature film based on a Stephen King story, is now playing in theaters. While facing stiff competition from big-budget studio movies like The Little Mermaid, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the horror film has held its own, pulling in close to $40 million and counting at the box office. Whether the numbers are enough to result in a sequel getting ordered remains to be seen.
For director Rob Savage, he's all set to go with an idea in mind if The Boogeyman 2 ends up coming to fruition. Speaking about the film in an interview with Horror Geek Life, Savage addressed the potentiality of a sequel happening. He said that not only is there a great idea for a follow-up film, but 20th Century execs are said to be "excited" about it as well. Whether that gets greenlit depends upon the final...

The Boogeyman centers on Sadie and Sawyer after a tragedy involving their mother. The Boogeyman is loosely based on Stephen King's short story of the same name with a pretty significant change. King's short story follows Sadie and Sawyer's therapist father, Will, during a session with a man named Lester Billings, whose children were recently killed by the boogeyman. Sadie and Sawyer didn't exist in the short story, but the film shifted the narrative to follow Will's family, with Lester appearing in the beginning, acting as a catalyst for the events in the movie that affect Will and his family.
After Sadie finds Lester's dead body in her mother's art closet, the boogeyman starts haunting her home too. Beneath the surface, the film is an exploration of trauma, as most of King's horror stories are. Will's family has recently gone through something tragic,...

The following contains major spoilers for The Boogeyman, now playing in theaters.
When it comes to Stephen King adaptations, fans often wonder if the movies are based on true stories. The Boogeyman is the latest to pique curiosity. That's because it feels like a real-world horror, playing on how kids often think there's a monster hiding in the closet.
It could easily play into some childhood experience King had, with director Rob Savage expanding and plugging in real-life drama. This would, of course, enhance it as a psychological horror. Interestingly, while The Boogeyman isn't based on a true experience, Savage has been influenced by another horror movie and how it used the night as a cover to kill.

This weekend sees the release of the latest adventure in the Transformers franchise as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts hits theaters. The film is meant to reboot the series, yet still in the same universe as all previous films. As I understand it, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a sequel to Bumblebee which also makes it a prequel to the original five Michael Bay directed movies (Bay remains a producer on this new film.)
The Transformers franchise has seen it fair share of ups and downs, beginning in 2007 when the original big screen film hit theaters and opened with $70.5 million on its way to a $319.2 million domestic finish ($709.7 worldwide). 2009 saw Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hit screens with an opening weekend of $108.9 million and a $402.1 million domestic finish ($836.3 million worldwide.) In 2011, we got the final Shia Labeouf led Transformers film with Dark of the Moon that opened with $97.8 million...

While The Boogeyman has a fairly straightforward story, the Stephen King short story adaptation still throws in a surprising twist involving Sadie’s lighter. The Boogeyman sees Host director Rob Savage bring his considerable horror pedigree to a more mainstream project. Savage’s first two movies, Host and Dashcam, were more experimental efforts that took place entirely on a Zoom call and a live stream respectively. In contrast, The Boogeyman is an uncomplicated adaptation of Stephen King’s short story of the same name from the iconic horror author’s debut collection Night Shift.
Fortunately, The Boogeyman’s success ended King’s bad adaptation streak. The Boogeyman follows the Harper family, consisting of a therapist father, Will, and his two daughters Sadie and Sawyer. The Harper sisters are reeling from the death of their mother when a mysterious man warns Will of the titular threat.

The Boogeyman is based on Stephen King's short story of the same name. While the Boogeyman as a folklore creature has existed for generations, the 2023 horror film put a new spin on the idea of a monster hiding in the closet. Shawn Levy, who produced the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, also produced The Boogeyman. As such, many fans have found themselves drawing comparisons between the two supernatural stories.

The following contains spoilers for The Boogeyman, now playing in theaters.
When it comes to adapting a Stephen King story, there's a strong possibility that creative elements will be changed. Whether it's for TV or the big screen, it's just the way Hollywood operates. After all, the visual medium versus paper is a whole different beast, not to mention the creatives involved do want to put their stamp on things.
Some changes from the source material help make the narrative fit modern audiences in terms of representation. This strategy certainly helps dated stories roll with the times. It also tightens up the overall scope, due to King's heavily packed, long-winded writing style. This has been seen with The Shining, the It franchise and many of Stephen King's other works. Following that same pattern, The Boogeyman also makes quite a few adjustments, fleshing out what was a rather thin story.

The Boogeyman, a Stephen King adaptation, was met with an unexpected twist during its production journey. Rob Savage, the film’s director, originally included a toy lightsaber, a cherished Star Wars item. However, due to Disney’s intervention, the iconic prop had to be removed and replaced, as per Collider.
Disney is heavily protective of the Star Wars brand and its family-friendly appeal. The company was uneasy about the inclusion of a malfunctioning lightsaber in a horror film, particularly since the feature casts Vivien Lyra Blair, who had also played as the young Princess Leia in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
In the initial script, Blair's character, Sawyer, possessed a toy lightsaber that would flicker and fail whenever the film's ominous monster approached. This lightsaber was subsequently replaced with a moon lamp after Disney expressed concerns. The production team crew found themselves in a dilemma and a bit of a scramble,...

The Boogeyman has revived Stephen King adaptations after an awful four-year streak. The new film is loosely based on King's 1978 short story and follows a teenage girl haunted by a monster after losing her mother in a car accident. Like King's other stories, The Boogeyman delves into traumatic experiences and how they affect the characters who've endured them. King has never been a fan of mindless horror, and each of his stories holds a deeper message, though, on the surface, they might seem like typical scary stories. Even It, following a killer clown, holds a crucial message about overcoming fear.
Unfortunately, not all of King's adaptations have correctly portrayed his messages. King's greatest criticism of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is that it left out the message in his book. King compared the film to a nice car with no engine and dispised how Kubrick ignored his message about addiction...

As though it didn't already extend Stephen King's short story enough, The Boogeyman sets up a sequel that goes even further beyond the horror author's initial narrative. Warning: Spoilers lie ahead for The Boogeyman!
Having finally made its way to terrifying audiences in theaters, Vivien Lyra Blair is breaking down The Boogeyman's shocking ending. Based on the Stephen King short story of the same name, the movie centers on Blair's Sawyer, her big sister Sadie, played by Yellowjackets' Sophie Thatcher, and father Will, played by Chris Messina, as they find themselves targeted by the titular entity. The Boogeyman ends with the family successfully fending it off and lighting it aflame, also burning down their home and remnants of their recently deceased mom and wife.

Numbers have begun pouring in for this first weekend of June and it appears we have another Super Mario Bros. Movie situation brewing. If you recall all the way back in April, Super Mario Bros was tracking to do roughly $87 million for the weekend, yet by Sunday that number had ballooned to a record breaking $146.3 million (while also securing the worldwide record for an animated opening.) I don’t think we are going to see an explosion like that with Spider-Man but original tracking had Across The Spider-Verse at around $80 million, in our predictions from Thursday we saw the writing on the wall and put our guesstimate at around the $110 million mark. The film managed an impressive $17.35 million in Thursday previews, making it the second best preview numbers ever for an animated title just behind The Incredible’s 2’s take of $18.5 million. That film would ultimately open at $182.6 million, but...

Rob Savage's new horror film "The Boogeyman" is, like many recent horror films, all about grief. The central family of the film consists of a father (Chris Messina), his teenage daughter Sadie (Sophie Thatcher), and the eight-year-old Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair). Hanging over them all is the death of the family's matriarch, a beloved wife and mother who left an emotional hole in the house, as well as a great deal of clothes and painting supplies. Every day is grey and sad, and the family is trying to pick up the pieces as best they can. Into the bleakness comes a symbolic monster, the titular Boogeyman, who creeps out of closets and stalks humans from the shadows. The monster can imitate the voices of loved ones, and can seemingly slip through shadowy schisms in the space-time continuum, ceasing to exist when the lights are flicked on.

Rob Savage is one of the most exciting emerging filmmakers today, and he's making a huge transition with The Boogeyman. The director's new Stephen King adaptation is a massive, big-budget undertaking, roughly $35 million compared to the approximately $100 thousand budget of his first two films. He showed what he could do with a little bit of money and amazing ideas in the Covid cinema masterpiece Host, and followed it up with the controversial but classic-in-time Dashcam.
He's putting found footage aside and helming the new 20th Century Studios film written by Mark Heyman following a draft from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Savage has an intuition for suspense and scares, and was a clever choice to direct The Boogeyman, which doesn't exactly adapt the Stephen King story so much as use it (and sort of continue it) to create its own world. With a catching enthusiasm and charm, Savage spoke with MovieWeb about the film,...

Host director Rob Savage makes his mainstream Hollywood debut The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of a Stephen King short story from the co-writers of A Quiet Place. As such, it delivers some effective scares and is elevated by a trio of terrific performances, though the story itself ultimately feels a little derivative.
Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher plays Sadie Harper, a teenager whose family – younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and therapist father Will (Chris Messina) – are still grieving the tragic loss of her mother in a recent car accident. Their lives are swiftly upended when a strange man (David Dastmalchian) seemingly commits suicide in their house, after relating a dark tale to Will about a shadow monster that killed his children.

Based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name, The Boogeyman smartly crafts a story that is as disconcerting as it is emotionally raw. There is something to be said about our society’s lack of openness about death and grief, but The Boogeyman definitely handles these themes well, all while connecting them with the horror of childhood fears — real and imagined. Directed by Rob Savage, The Boogeyman does an outstanding job of terrifying without forgetting about the very human emotions and relationships that anchor and elevate the story.
The film opens with a terrifying scene. A child in her crib is crying and the closet door squeaks open as the sound of her father’s voice is heard. But it isn’t a scene that offers comfort. Rather, it is one that chills and sets up the rest of the film. The Boogeyman shifts its focus, centering...

This weekend, Rob Savage (Host) brings his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman to theaters. But for those of us who were of horror-watching age eighteen years ago (that hurts to say out loud), there was 2005’s Boogeyman… a horror film that launched an entire trilogy.
That first movie was successful enough to spawn both Boogeyman 2 and Boogeyman 3, though both sequels went straight to video here in the States. So, in honor of the upcoming The Boogeyman, let us take a look back at the Boogeymen of old. Even if they are completely and utterly unrelated in every way possible… and we cannot stress that enough.
Boogeyman (2005)
Directed by Stephen Kay, Boogeyman came to us at an interesting time for the horror genre. “Torture porn” was in full swing with Wolf Creek, Saw and Hostel all releasing. PG-13 horror competition included The Grudge, The Skeleton Key and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Up next from Host and Dashcam director Rob Savage is The Boogeyman, based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story, which is now playing in theaters this weekend.
Savage spoke with Bloody Disgusting about making a studio film on the heels of two smaller-scale found footage horror features, while also discussing his lessons learned from those experiences, as well as his approach to designing a PG-13, boundary-testing creature.
“I’d never really thought of myself as being somebody who would direct found footage movies, and then I ended up doing two back-to-back,” Savage says of transitioning from Dashcam to The Boogeyman. “But it took a little bit of a jolt to get back into that mode of storytelling. I was amazed by how much I was able to take from working on Host and Dashcam and work into this movie. Both of those movies were totally improvised.”
Savage continues, “This movie...

Last night at the world premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse there was a huge sigh of relief from the mass of animators inside Westwood’s Regency Village Theater: the $100M budgeted sequel to the Oscar winning animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was done; having completed post-production literally just ten days ago after a five-year trek to the screen which included a Covid delay due to the backlog in post-production houses. Starting today abroad, and into tomorrow in U.S./Canada, the continuing adventures of Miles Morales will see the light of day in what is expected to be a $150M global opening.
Overseas that’s a projected $60M opening, including $20M from China –which loves Spider-Man (the first animated pic grossed over $62M there)— as well as Belgium, France, Netherlands today; Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Mexico, UK tomorrow, and Spain and the Prc on Friday. The first...
