a cheap and vulgar ripoff of Devilman.
15 July 2015 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Seriously, I honestly don't know how anyone could make an even bigger Devilman ripoff than this, unless they actually tried to. pretty much almost everything about nightmare campus plagiarizes Go Nagai's Devilman.

the art direction in nightmare campus is an obvious carbon copy of Go Nagai's art style. it's almost like the writers were desperately trying to make it seem as if this was in fact a Go Nagai creation, even though this is actually based off a manga by Toshio Maeda.

what else makes this a cheap Devilman ripoff? well, the plot in Devilman is about a young teenage boy named Akira Fudo who travels to the Himalayas, but is killed along with his parents, but Akira is reborn after being possessed by a demon named Amon, and must fight against demons in order to protect the earth from becoming hell.

and guess what, nightmare campus has the exact same plot, since it's also about a teenager known as Masao Sera who goes on vacation to the Himalayas, then dies, then gets possessed by a demon known as Esedess, and slays demons to protect earth, etc.

does anyone see the strong resemblance between both plots? I have a hard time believing that's a coincidence. oh and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

the main hero himself, Masao Sera, wears a red and yellow t-shirt that looks WAY too much like the t shirt Akira Fudo wears in the 70s Devilman anime.

and in the original Devilman manga Akira teams up with group of delinquents to fight off the demons, and yes, Masao does the same in nightmare campus.

the demon who possesses Masao, Esedess, has an appearance that looks ripped off from Devilman's design from the original 1970's Devilman anime, except Esedess looks like he was drawn by a ten year old. in fact, most of the demons in nightmare campus all look like something I would expect a kid to draw. and surprisingly, this was all animated and drawn by adults. need I say more....

so yeah, nightmare campus practically rips off nearly everything from Devilman, ranging from the art style, the characters, the story and concept. but let's also talk about the other issues nightmare campus suffers from.

the soundtrack is embarrassing. I cannot believe that Masamichi Amano was the music composer for this anime. and he's a great musician. the music in nightmare campus sounds like crappy space age music with fart noises as instruments, that's how bad it is. but to make matters worse, half of the soundtrack consists of music ripped from other anime, such as Urotsukidoji, ninja resurrection and even Giant Robo. and yes, I am fully aware that Masamichi Amano also composes the music for those titles, but that doesn't excuse laziness.

nightmare campus also has gratuitous rape scenes that go on for almost 10 minutes and serve no real purpose to the plot and this isn't helped by the fact that half of the rape scenes is mixed with gory violence. just because this is a hentai title is also no excuse, because sex and violence do NOT mix well together.

the violence in nightmare campus is just as gratuitous and just WAY too extreme. I almost gagged at one of the scenes of violence. not even Devilman was as violent as this.

if you want a decent demonic horror anime, go watch Devilman, Demon Lord Dante, or even Urotsukidoji. nightmare campus deserves to be avoided. i'm surprised Go Nagai himself has't sued the writers of this piece of trash. and at least Devilman, regardless of how violent it may be, actually carries a message, and the message is that any kind of war isn't justified whatsoever and there is no justification for human beings killing each other either.

nightmare campus on the other hand is just gratuitous violence and rape for the hell of it and it holds no real message, which also proves that the idiot writers who tried to make nightmare campus too much like Devilman have missed the point of what the real message in Devilman is actually all about.
