40. Night Moves

Since 2006, Kelly Reichardt has found a way to reach inside of the hearts of her audiences, plucking out strings one by one with desolate re-imaginations of the American Pacific Northwest, seen through the eyes of people not so different than ourselves. With Meek’s Cutoff, she departed from her typical genre and moved in to the old west, but you could still see her stark realism, perfectly imagined on screen. Now, Reichardt has shifted gears again, this time to present day (still in the Pacific Northwest), following three environmental activists as they plan to blow up a dam. But this time, Reichardt has eschewed all sense of dry, dirty characterization for a much more flowing story where the characters emerge from their settings more fully. It’s still methodical, but somewhere in between the planning and heist itself, Reichardt’s star Jesse Eisenberg finds notes we haven’t »

Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $12,762

Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 8

Description: The Messengers is a web series about a young couple adjusting to life in the gentrified part of Brooklyn. That, on its own, sounds like a web series idea we've heard a million times, but luckily, The Messengers has a twist. Its heroes, Liza and James, are contract killers who must carry out hits across the borough. Each episode will bring Liza and James to some yuppie haven (a brunch restaurant, a Fairway supermarket, a yoga class, etc.), where they must fit in while also successfully taking out each of their targets. It's "Grosse Pointe Blank meets Girls, or Louie meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith," according to the project's Kickstarter description.

Creator Jamie Effros, who also co-stars as James, gives more details about »

Angelina Jolie: A Therapist Would Have a Field Day Analyzing the Films I Choose to Do

18 December 2014 1:40 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Angelina Jolie is well aware that art doesn't always imitate life. Case in point: The film she decided to make with husband Brad Pitt just after the pair tied the knot at their chateau in the south of France. "Yes, we spent our honeymoon playing two people in a terrible marriage," Jolie, 39, laughingly told The Hollywood Reporter for its annual Rulebreakers issue, on newsstands now. By the Sea has the couple reuniting for the first time onscreen since they made Mr. and Mrs. Smith a decade earlier, but this time she had the power to boss her longtime partner around. »

Angelina Jolie on Directing Brad Pitt: A Therapist Would Have a Field Day

18 December 2014 9:30 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Mixing business with pleasure isn't easy -- even when you're one-half of Brangelina.

Angelina Jolie has decided to take her talents behind the camera and while we anxiously await the Christmas Day release of her film Unbroken, the mother-of-six is busy working on her next flick, By the Sea.

In addition to starring in the romance drama, Jolie is also directing the film, which co-stars her new husband Brad Pitt. By the Sea takes place in France (and was filmed in Malta) during the mid-1970s, and follows Vanessa (Jolie), a former dancer, and her husband Roland (Pitt), an American writer, as they travel the country together. The couple seems to be growing apart, but when they linger in a quiet seaside town, they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/cafe-keeper and a hotel owner.

The Electric Side of James Newton Howard

13 November 2014 6:00 AM, PST | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

James Newton Howard is best known for his large, layered, cinematic scores for films like Maleficent, Snow White and the Huntsman, and The Hunger Games series. These orchestra driven scores are perfect for epic tales of good versus evil, intense battle scenes and journeys of self-discovery. But in Nightcrawler, Howard seems to have found his more edgy, electronic side, turning in a score that sounds more like something you would expect from a composer like Cliff Martinez – and that’s a good thing. Changing up your musical style not only helps push boundaries, it can also give us great music we may not have otherwise expected from certain composers. Danny Elfman created the quirky music for films like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Big Fish, but he also created the dramatic scores for Good Will Hunting and Silver Linings Playbook and action films like Mission Impossible and Planet of the Apes. Angelina Jolie Talks Marriage: It Feels Different

4 November 2014 2:50 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Marriage looks good on Angelina Jolie as she covers the Dec. issue of 'Vanity Fair' magazine.

Newlywed Angelina Jolie has never looked better on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine, and it just may be due to her recent "I dos" to Brad Pitt.

Though Pitt and Jolie already have six kids and have been together since 2006, the actress still admits of being a wife, "It does feel different."

She adds, "It feels nice to be husband and wife."

Sharing a bit about their wedding, Jolie recalls to di Giovanni the vows that her children wrote for her and Pitt. "They did not expect us never to fight, but they made us promise to always say, 'Sorry,' if we do," she explains. "So they said, 'Do you?,' and we said, 'We do!'"

Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 episode 6 review: A Fractured House

30 October 2014 2:05 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

It's been an uphill struggle, but Marvel's Agents Of Shield is now officially solidly entertaining TV. Here's James' review...

This review contains spoilers.

2.6 A Fractured House

This week on Agents Of Shield: things happen! Plots and subplots alike receive attention! Character arcs get advanced! I'm officially calling it: Agents Of Shield is now a reliably competent piece of television. The bar has been raised. Admittedly, only to the place it should've been this time last year, but still. Progress is progress.

After a stunning introduction last episode, Mockingbird continues to heat up a formerly tepid cast along with the other new arrivals. The interplay between Bobbi and Hunter was some of the best material this show has ever produced, giving it a Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibe that could easily carry the show forward on its own. I don't care how they do it, I want to see more of these two together. »

Spotlight on the Stars: Brad Pitt

15 October 2014 12:54 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to take a look at one of Hollywood’s absolute bigger stars. He’s about as A-list as the A-list gets…the name? Well, Brad Pitt of course. Not only is he a movie star with all capital letters (Movie Star!) and a top tier celebrity, he’s also developed into one of the industry’s best and most interesting actors as well. Pitt is the type of star that doesn’t rest on his laurels and often seems to attach himself to challenging material, something that will win the man an acting Oscar one day (he already won his first one last year for helping to produce Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave). As high as he’s soared already, the best could still be to come. Pitt got his noticeable start in the business (after some uncredited acting jobs on »

Angelina Jolie refuses to luxuriate in the Oscar buzz surrounding her upcoming WWII drama 'Unbroken.' On Sept. 8, the actress-turned-director started on her third feature, 'By the Sea,' a romantic drama touting her first self-directed leading role and her first pairing with husband Brad Pitt since 2005's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". Showing no sign of slowing down, word is in that Jolie's fourth film has taken shape. According to Deadline, Jolie has signed on to helm "Africa," a drama based on paleo-archaeologist Richard Leakey’s fight against ivory poachers in Kenya. Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") wrote the script, which Jolie plans to shoot soon after wrapping "By the Sea." David Ellison’s Skydance Productions, known for blockbusters like the "Mission: Impossible" series and the upcoming "Terminator: Genisys" trilogy, is behind the picture. “I've felt a deep connection to Africa and »

More Stars are Making the Transition from Actor to Director

By Anjelica Oswald

Managing Editor

For some actors, it is a natural progression to move from using their talents in front of the camera to testing their skills behind it. Though actors have been making the transition for years, 2013 was a particular popular year for actors-turned-directors. Among some of the releases throughout the year were Ben Stiller‘s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Lake Bell’s In A World…, her directorial debut. The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival was the directorial launching pad of Jason Bateman’s Bad Words and Mike MyersSupermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, and the festival also screened Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon and Ralph FiennesThe Invisible Woman.

Though many of these actors’ projects may not garner any awards, there are some that make their way to the Oscars, such as Ben Affleck’s Argo (2012), which won the best picture Oscar »

abstew here with some random thoughts on the just released new stills from the newest directorial effort of Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, By the Sea. EW received the exclusive pics (hence the magazine's watermark on the photos) and a mini-interview with the writer/director/producer and star that pairs her up on screen with new husband Brad Pitt (their first on-screen partnering since the film that brought them together and launched a million tabloid magazine covers, Mr. and Mrs. Smith). Set in the 1970's, Jolie stars as a former ballet dancer travelling France with her American husband (that would be Pitt, naturally). Their marriage is beginning to show signs of strain and they find themselves drawn to the inhabitants of a small costal town on their journeys...and comedy ensues! (But probably not):
