In one scene a man is seen singing "Stand By Me" on a karaoke machine. This is an obvious reference to another movie based on a Stephen King story, Stand by Me (1986).

One of the dogs in the movie is named "Cujo", Which is the name of another Stephen King novel about a killer dog.
Three actors have also starred in other Stephen King (I) movies: Rob Lowe (The Stand), Andre Braugher (The Mist) and James Cromwell (The Green Mile).

Donald Sutherland is the father of Kiefer Sutherland, who appeared in the Stephen King adaptation Stand by Me (1986), and later appeared in the television series 24 (2001), in which James Cromwell played his father.
Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer both previously worked together in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)

This marks the second film series in which James Cromwell has appeared after his wife Julie Cobb. Cobb appeared in the original film Salem's Lot (1979). She also appeared on the original Star Trek (1966) series, while Cromwell appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: First Contact (1996). Samantha Mathis's mother, Bibi Besch, was also a Star Trek veteran, having appeared in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982).

The name of the town in the novel is Jerusalem's Lot and both it and Sidewinder (from The Shining) are name checked in another Stephen King novel, Doctor Sleep.
