Not Too Shabby
25 April 2005 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Perhaps the best part about this movie is the fact that you don't have to play soccer, or even like it for that matter, to enjoy this film. It takes a soccer fan to really appreciate films such as "A Shot At Glory," which I would adamantly contend is a much better soccer movie. Much like the movie "Victory," "The Game of Their Lives" is more of an inspirational piece with soccer as the backdrop as opposed to soccer being a precursor of the plot. The director was leery of the film from the beginning and admitted that he doubted a movie tied to soccer would be successful. He said that his intention was to put out the best American soccer movie ever made. The casting director did a decent job of casting actors with some, although greatly limited, soccer ability. The actor's lack of footskills was combated by camera techniques and angles. The movie was a great historical reminder of a team which was not well enough known to be forgotten. I see this movie picking up its earning steam as soccer moms begin getting wind of it. It is a great family movie and very clean content. Think "Remember the Titans."
