Trivia

Poison and Roxy were originally planned to be cisgender females, but were changed during development to transsexual females, only to get around the taboos of men beating up women which is controversial to North America and to feminist groups that may sue Capcom, which is revealed by Yasuda in 1993's "All About Capcom Head to Head Fighting Games". When the game was ported onto the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, Capcom USA avoided the issue all together by putting the transgendered female's natural male appearances by there birth names which are "Billy" (A.K.A. Poison) and "Sid" (A.K.A. Roxy). 23 years later, In the art book of Street Fighter X Tekken, a footnote from Yasuda states that he'll always personally view Poison and Roxy as cisgender females in Japan (which is why Poison and Roxy were in the Nintendo console/handheld versions of Final Fight in Japan).

In Final Fight One [2001] for the Game Boy Advance, the dialog between "Alpha/Zero" Cody and Rolento pokes fun at the 1991, Super Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game since Rolento did not appear in it. Alpha/Zero Cody says "Um. It's strange. I don't remember this way. Oh yes, I took a shortcut, after beating the policeman (Edi. E). I walked along the coast..." This is a reference to how an entire stage was missing from the Super NES version which took place after the defeat of Edi. E and before going to the Bay Area.

The playable characters are as follows: *Mike Haggar: Mayor of Metro City and a former fighter. He wages war on the Mad Gear gang when they kidnap his daughter Jessica. Slow, but powerful. *Cody: Jessica's boyfriend, he wants nothing more than to rescue her from the clutches of the Mad Gears. In addition to being the most well-balanced character, he can also hold onto knives and stab with them rather than just throwing them. *Guy: Cody's martial artist friend who is more than willing to lend a hand in the war against the Mad Gears. Weaker than the other two characters, but faster.

Nintendo had very stringent censorship morals when this game hit the Super Nintendo. As Damnd's name was too close to the word "damned", his name became Thrasher. Likewise, Sodom's name became Katana (most likely because the name could be taken as a Biblical reference or because it sounds too similar to Saddam (Hussein.))

Numerous elements of the game were reused in the Street Fighter series. Haggar's spinning clothesline and pile driver became Zangief attacks, Guy's spinning kick became a special move for most Shotokan characters, the "Car Smashing" bonus game was used in similar fashion in the Street Fighter II games, and many characters later appeared in Street Fighter games (Sodom, Guy, etc.) Conversely, Chun-Li makes a cameo in the first stage of Final Fight 2 (1993).

The working title of the game was Street Fighter '89. It was intended to be something of a sequel to the original Street Fighter [1987] and Ryu and Ken were originally planned to be the main characters.
