Chappelle Sued by Former Manager

15 December 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Funnyman Dave Chappelle is facing a court battle with his former manager Mustafa Abuelhija, who claims the comedian owes him a portion of his TV show profits. Abuelhija filed a breach-of-contract suit against Chappelle in Manhattan Federal Court on Tuesday, alleging the comedian owes him at least $864,500. Chappelle's ex-manager claims he helped broker deals which earned Chappelle $10 million, during the 10 month period he served as his personal manager. The 33-year-old walked away from his Comedy Central Chappelle's Show TV series earlier this year and fled to a spiritual retreat in South Africa. Abuelhija claims Chappelle returned from South Africa and told him his services were no longer needs and paid him a "paltry $40,000 as an 'advance' against the sum" he was owed. Abuelhija is also demanding profits from Chappelle's reported $50 Million deal with Comedy Central. »

'Chappelle's Show' set for return

5 December 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Chappelle's Show is returning to Comedy Central, but that doesn't mean its star is any time soon. The network announced Monday that it will air more episodes of the hit cable series next year using footage shot before Dave Chappelle abandoned the abandoned the production in May. But Comedy Central's decision to air the never-before-seen sketches only increases the unlikelihood Chappelle will ever return to complete the third season of the series, the network's president, Doug Herzog, said. "We have to do this because we have no idea what the future foretells," Herzog said. "He hasn't been able to articulate what he would like to do, so we're moving forward." »

15 July 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

There's still no word from Comedy Central on when Chappelle's Show will return to the network, more than two months after the network announced that Dave Chappelle had stopped work on the program. The third season of the sketch show had been scheduled to begin May 31. But that didn't happen and there's still no word as to when Chappelle will return to work. "The ball's in Dave's court," Doug Herzog, president of Comedy Central, told The Hollywood Reporter after the channel's presentation in Beverly Hills as part of the Television Critics Assn. Chappelle raises bar of TV-DVD

2 June 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Underscoring the growing clout of the TV-DVD category, Chappelle's Show: Season 2 Uncensored chalked up first-day sales of nearly 500,000 copies, setting a new TV-DVD sales record, according to Paramount Home Entertainment. Within a week of its May 24 release, sales of the hefty three-disc, $37 package topped 1.2 million units, Paramount said, while sales of the first-season set, out for more than a year, spiked past the 3 million-unit mark. That's 200,000 units more than the sales tally in early May, when Comedy Central announced Season 3 of Dave Chappelle's highly rated sketch comedy show would be postponed indefinitely and the comedian fled to South Africa, where rumors circulated that he had checked himself into a mental health facility. »

Comedian Dave Chappelle has reportedly returned home to Ohio after a "spiritual retreat" in South Africa. But the funnyman insisted he was just "stressed out" and needed a break. Now, Chappelle has returned to his hometown of Yellow Springs, but his agent Matt Labov insists there's still no signs that he'll return to making his show and he has been told not to book any live performances. »

'Chappelle' on hold at Comedy Central

5 May 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Comedy Central has postponed the premiere of its hit series Chappelle's Show less than a month before it was scheduled to return for a third season. The network offered no rationale for the decision, releasing only a brief statement: "Comedy Central has suspended production on the third season of Chappelle's Show until further notice. All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future." Representatives for the show's star, Dave Chappelle, declined comment. One of Comedy Central's highest-rated series, Chappelle was supposed to be back on the air May 31. The network already has postponed the third season once; Chappelle originally was scheduled to bow in February. A Comedy Central spokesman had blamed the first postponement on writing delays. Other published reports noted that Chappelle was battling the flu. »
