The literal translation of the title of this movie is: the Deadly Map of Gold (Mine).
This movie deserves a big thumb down because it is based on the lie spread by bandits and what is in the movie is completely different from the truth:
In the late 19th century, as result of the reign of the corrupted Manchu regime of the Qing Empire, there were many bands of bandits in northeastern part of China, the ancestral home of Manchu. To legitimize their status, the bandits made up many lies in which themselves were portrayed as patriotic heroes, and one of the lies was exactly what is described here in the plot outline of this movie.
Consider the time this movie was made, i.e., one year after the June 4th 1989 Tiananmen incident, resulting in the western condemnation, one can obviously figure out the Chinese government was desperate in finding some political propaganda of nationalism to counter such condemnation, and out of desperation, the century old lies spread by bandits were used. Despite its spectacular achievement, the original governmental intent could only be summarized in one word: pathetic.
