The political struggles described in the movie actually happens frequently in China during that era, except that there was a twist: in the real life, the so-called counterrevolutionaries were actually patriotic communist members who criticized the disastrous policy of Great Leap Forward, the political movement launched by Mao resulting in millions of death in the following years, and in this movie, they were demonized as counterrevolutionaries.
