7 films in makeup Oscar chair

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday announced the seven films being considered for achievement in makeup for the 77th Annual Academy Awards. The films in consideration are Miramax Pictures' The Aviator, MGM Pictures' De-Lovely, Warner Bros. Pictures' Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Sony Pictures /Revolution Studios' Hellboy, Paramount Pictures' Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Newmarket Films' The Passion of the Christ and Fine Line Features' The Sea Inside. Ten-minute clip reels from each of the seven films will be screened Jan. 22 for the Makeup Award Nominating Committee. The members may nominate up to three of the seven films for Oscar consideration, recommend a single film for a Special Achievement Award or elect to recommend that no award be given in this category. Nominations for the 77th Annual Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 25. »

ACE makes Eddie Award nomination cuts

The American Cinema Editors announced nominations on Thursday for the 2004 ACE Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in film, television and documentaries. Nominees for best edited dramatic feature film are Miramax Films' The Aviator, Finding Neverland and Kill Bill: Volume 2, DreamWorks' Collateral, Fox Searchlight Pictures' Kinsey and Warner Bros. Pictures' Million Dollar Baby. The five nominees for best edited comedy or musical include Focus Features' Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Fox Searchlight's Sideways, MGM's De-Lovely, Pixar Animation Studios' The Incredibles, and Universal Pictures' Ray. In the best edited documentary race are IFC Films' Fahrenheit 9/11, New Yorker Films' My Architect, and Sony Pictures Classics' Riding Giants. »

Sold, MGM takes its final bows

Marking the true end of an era, MGM will cease to be a stand-alone studio this year once its purchase by a Sony-led consortium is completed. After years during which majority owner Kirk Kerkorian put the studio on and off the block -- and months of uncertainty during which both Sony and Time Warner circled the studio -- CEO Alex Yemenidjian and chief operating officer Chris McGurk closed out a year in which MGM did not leave a major impact at the boxoffice. But, ironically, they managed to put in place what they consider one of the strongest upcoming slates in recent studio history. Amid all the question marks about the company's future, the fact that MGM's staff remained focused on the product was an accomplishment in itself. While MGM celebrated its history when the Cole Porter biopic De-Lovely played as the closing-night attraction at the Festival de Cannes, back in the United States, Barbershop 2: Back in Business established itself as an urban hit. "We had a great year," McGurk says. "We are handing over one of the strongest slates in memory. We have tripled the value of the library and home video. There have been some great innovations in ideas to using the library, and this has all been key to the transaction." »
