Rocky. Rocky II. Rocky III. Rocky IV….I could keep going and somehow we’ll end with Creed, but that doesn’t matter. What does, however, is who Rocky was inspired after, and what that man has to lay claim to fame.

Chuck Wepner is his name. He’s the man that went fifteen rounds in the ring with the man of the hour, Muhammad AliChuck also happens to be the name of the new film coming out about his life in and out of the ring and show business. Directed by Philippe Falardeau (who had previously directed The Good Lie), the film stars Liev Schreiber as Chuck Wepner, Naomi Watts as Linda, Elisabeth Moss as Phyliss, Jim Gaffigan as John, and Ron Perlman as Al Braverman.

Of course, since this is a dramatic version of real life events, it wouldn’t be a film without having Sylvester Stallone »

Akiva Goldsman may be best known as an Oscar-winning screenwriter whose credits include “A Beautiful Mind” and “Cinderella Man,” but he appears to have found a second act as a horror director. At the inaugural edition of The Overlook Film Festival, a horror film festival taking place at the Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood, Oregon, Goldsman premiered “Stephanie,” the low-budget supernatural horror film that he directed for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions.

After the screening, Goldsman and Blum shared some breaking news with the audience: The pair would be teaming up again for a new adaptation of “Firestarter,” Stephen King’s 1980 novel about a young girl with pyrokensis and the government agency on her trail.

No one knows about this at all,” said Blum, who also received the festival’s Visionary Award for his support of horror films. “Akiva and Stephen King have a long relationship. We wouldn’t do »

Catfight review

11 April 2017 8:29 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Sandra Oh and Anne Heche beat the ever-loving crap out of each other in Onur Tukel's latest indie offering...

If you’ve only heard the briefest of things about Catfight, you’d be forgiven for imagining a sort of female version of The Fast Show’s ‘Long Big Punch Up’ and, to be fair, that wouldn’t be too far off the mark.

Turkish-American indie filmmaker Onur Tukel is back in the spotlight with this new outing, leaning into satire and away from his slightly more uncomfortable forays into horror-comedy.

While some of the director’s previous efforts, like Applesauce and Summer Of Blood, drew some extremely positive reviews, general audiences haven’t responded in kind so far, and he doesn’t make it easy for the mainstream to embrace him with Catfight, either. And you know what? Good. I may not have personally enjoyed a lot of Onur Tukel’s films, »

"Tear Down the Fences": Watching Capra in the Age of Trump

The retrospective Frank Capra, The American Dreamer is showing April 10 - May 31, 2017 in the United Kingdom.Frank CapraFrank Capra has fallen badly out of fashion in recent decades. While still well-known for the extraordinary Depression-era purple patch that produced It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), the critics have rarely been kind. His work is routinely derided as “Capra-corn” for its perceived sentimentality and “fairy tale” idealism while the man himself is written off in favour of contemporaries Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges and Ernst Lubitsch.Elliot Stein, writing in Sight & Sound in 1972, attacked Capra’s “fantasies of good will, which at no point conflict with middle-class American status quo values”, arguing that his “shrewdly commercial manipulative tracts” consist of little more than “philistine-populist notions and greeting-card sentiments”. Pauline Kael found him “softheaded,” Derek Malcolm a huckster hawking “cosily absurd fables.” To an extent, »
