The literal translation of the title of this movie is: Far East Espionage War.
This movie, like most Chinese war movie, is based on the true story that really happened, but what is unique about this movie is that the main cause is not Chinese, but a Russian. In reality, the Russia officer who defected was Senior General Lushkov, the regional chief of NKVD in charge of Far East. (NKVD is predecessor of KGB). The main reason Senior General Lushkov wanted to defect was because in 1937-1938, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin started a bloody purge in the military, including the secret police, NKVD. As a result, 3 out of the first 5 Field Marshals of USSR were executed, 80% of the officers of brigade level and above were executed or jailed. Lushkov got spooked and defected to Japanese controlled Manchuria.
Since the Soviet dictator is still revered as a saint in China, this important part of the history is willfully ignored, but this first half is also crucial to answer why Senior General Lushkov had defected. Obviously, there is still a long way to go for Chinese movies to freely express the history in honest.
