Storyline

Daniel Mitchell is a typical 13 year-old boy - mad about space,'The X Files' and Pamela Anderson. Bright, capable of looking after himself, streetwise, he's the last person you'd expect to become a victim of bullying. But after he comes to the aid of a victimized school-friend, Daniel becomes the target of systematic, ruthless and destructive abuse. It starts as a personal battle between Daniel and his teenage aggressors - but it soon becomes clear that it's aided and abetted by the very people Daniel might rely upon to help - the teachers. The precise opposite of a feelgood movie.
3 November 2003 | by (England) – See all my reviews

Some people will look at this shocking and deeply troubling TV movie with disbelief, and try to convince themselves that nothing like this goes on in British schools. Those people would be in for a shock if they knew that the truth is often far more disturbing than anything you could invent. This film is compelling and all-too-believable in its study of a teenage astrology buff who moves with his parents to a typically bitter and inclusive small town, only to find that his new school is overrun with moronic, conformist louts who make life intolerable for the brave (or unfortunate) few who dare to be different. The teachers are just as bad, aware of the situation the likeable central character finds himself in, but doing not one thing to resolve it.

There are many, many scenes that will stick with you for weeks after you watch this one. The ruthless victimization of a well-meaning girl who has defiantly befriended the bullies' main target. The victim of a beating silently cleaning himself up in his darkened house. The haunting use of Radiohead's 'Creep' on the soundtrack. The thugs who force their victim to sniff glue. Even the minor incidents are portrayed with a real insight into the casual cruelty so beloved of the cap-headed hooligans and trainee council estate teenage mothers who are behind the abuse. It's all horribly realistic and the film-makers stick to their guns right up to (and beyond) the resolutely downbeat ending.
