The literal translation of the title of this movie is: test voyage.
This is a typical Great Leap Forward era political propaganda that was based on the true story, but with careful alteration due to governmental censorship, and here is what is willfully ignored in the movie:
The foreign engine was Soviet origin and long before the difficulties described in the movie, it technical flaws such those in design was criticized by returning oversea Chinese students who got their engineering degrees in west. However, their advice was ignored and they were consequently persecuted as Rightists in the 1957's Anti-Rightists Movement launched by Mao.
When the Sino-Soviet ideological split caused the complete withdraw of Soviet technical support (which did not solve the problem anyway where the technical support was present), those persecuted engineers was temporarily "liberated" and put to work. Of course, the problem was solved fast because the solution was obvious already suggested several years ago, the bureaucrats just did not listen.
This part of the true history was carefully and willfully ignored due to governmental censorship and this is why the story was not complete.
