The literal translation of the title of this movie is: Wives, Sons, Elders and Youths.
The title actually means the family. This movie is a masterpiece of social criticism on the effect of the Cultural Revolution in China, namely, the corruption of the bureaucracy.
One of the obvious result of the Cultural Revolution is that in that mad era, the fate and fortune or misfortune of the entire family is depends on the fate of the official. If the official was removed from power, his entire family suffers. This is why the corrupted officials would do anything to keep their power, and such evil effect are still very common in China today, even 2 decades after this movie was made.
