Early pioneer of introspection & criticism on the Cultural Revolution
The literal translation of the title of this movie is: Early Spring of the Southern River.
This movie is one of the early pioneers that criticize the Cultural Revolution, during which the only standard judging good and bad is the loyalty, which can be only one thing: absolute obedience. As a result of this practice, the organizational leaders were selected not because of their technical and managerial competence, and they remain on their post long after the end of the Cultural Revolution. Since such bureaucrats had absolutely no knowledge of modern equipment, what is depicted in the movie is inevitable, usually resulting in disasters or wastes. The story itself may be fake, but identical incidents are not uncommon in real life.
