Russian/American Expressionism.
7 October 2011 | by See all my reviews

The Germans are forever linked to the Expressionist movement--especially with films like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari". However, "Lullaby" looks very much like an Expressionist film--even though it's about Russians and was filmed in America. From the opening scene of very fanciful rooftops to the bizarre painted faces (that seem to be there for no particular reason) to the dream sequence, it all is very other-worldly and strange--and this great artistry is reason enough to see the film. HOWEVER, the film's plot is a bit of a mess. Could it be that this film was originally longer and it made more sense? As is, it seems woefully incomplete and in need of being fleshed out more. The narrative is lacking--other than watching a young servant girl abused and some weird escapist dreams or hallucinations, the film is like a lost snippet.
