One of the hidden theme of this film is obvious: everyone wanted to get rich quick in the era of reform, mistakenly believing that market economy is without moral and ethical standards.
The other theme is that the film points out the problem in the reform: merchants who work on commodity got wealth, but not for those who work on much important thing: the people's spirit, the teachers. The reform needs to improve the live of teachers as well.
