MASK or MASQUE (1986) 100 mins.
31 January 2004 | by See all my reviews

Watching this as an American, MASK was simply boring. There is no reason to care about any character. The two lead characters, Dir. Zhang and Fan Rouyan, spend most of their free time (and most of the movie) hanging around together in Zhang's bedroom studio, yet there is no romantic attraction taking place.

Zhang and Fan are not exactly in the same age group. They have little in common. Mr. Zhang has messy hair, bad teeth, and smokes like a chimney. Fan Rouyan dresses very nice, she looks nice, and she does not smoke. There is no real motivation for their long talks other than to serve the purpose of the writer.

Zhang is attracted to a depressed accountant. The accountant is so unhappy, the movie becomes not only boring, but also depressing to watch. The subtitles do not help... "She is a grood girl." Or, "That script has no realism, but it is most realistic."

MASK has a few interesting images and primary colors are used with flare by the director. However, there is no drama. MASK is boring.
