This 30 minutes feature is the directional debut of the talented Jack Hill, made the same year as he assisted Roger Corman on 'The Wasp Woman'. It is also the first starring role of character-actor Sid Haig. They would both work together years after in classics such as 'Spider Baby', 'The Big Bird Cage' and 'Coffy' and became a big influence for Tarantino. 'The Host' doesn't have much in common with any of these though. Haig is a nameless fugitive riding through the desert. He come across a lonely fort and decides to take a rest there. The place is only inhabited by a mysterious native woman, and a insane Spaniard, who have taken cover in a corner and shoots at anything coming too near! The woman ask our anti-hero to kill the nutball, and in the first half is the complication about deciding whether he should do it or not. What would he win/loose about it? With a tricky attack he defeat the other guy. And suddenly he discovers that he unwillingly have taken over his place! As the god of the tribe the woman is a part of! Now he is trapped at the fort, only to wait for another unlucky fella to pass by and defeat him! A simple, yet highly difficult and complex philosophy. It is strange little film, and it reminded Me a bit of 'El Topo'. Haig is fine in his role. And Hill shows a talent for using the smallest details of the location he had on his hand. It is rumored that this short inspired the end in Francis Ford Coppola's 'Apocalypse Now'. It could very much be true. There is many similarities.
