Lessington invests all his money, against his wife's opinion, in a business deal which he thinks will be to their benefit. Just as the deal is consummated, he meets with a severe accident, thereby rendering his lower limbs lifeless. The doctors advise his wife that he must be kept in a perfectly quiet place. Then she is apprehended of his total failure. But as his mind must be clear of all encumbrances, she keeps it to herself, and starts out to look for employment, through which to earn enough money to keep him in solitude. Owing to her good voice, she obtains a position as singer. Her husband, however, thinks that she is growing unfaithful to him, because she is going out every night. Thus it happens that he is left alone one night when there is a wind which blows the curtain against the lamp and overturns it in his room. He sees the carpet and curtain catch fire.
