Before the reform that was introduced in China in the 1980's, the basic rule of Chinese war movies was that it must have realistic base, and cannot be completely fake. When the political atmosphere is finally relaxed a little due to the reform, film crew had more room for their imagination and the prohibition of the earlier era was finally broken.
