An example of excellent cinematography, Ciudad De Dios provides a stunning and accurate portrait of life of the poor in Brazil, especially with the contrast shown between life 20 years ago as compared to that of today. The film is Fernando Meirelles' best work. The cinematography is impressive, and effectively focuses the viewers attention on key details of the film. Colors, signs, key terms and repeated imagery help to accentuate the struggle presented in the film. The voice of the main character is strong, but not overbearing, and tells the story as one of a community more than of one man. The acting is also noteworthy. Each character is impeccably cast. The documentary available on the DVD is an informative supplement to the film, and I would recommend watching it afterward. The documentary fills in the holes left by the film in terms of facts and statistics on life and the options available to Brazil's poor. If you don't appreciate this movie, you have no soul.
