Back in August, we reported that the highly-anticipated all-female spin-off Ocean's Eight will begin principal photography sometime this October in New York City, under the direction of Gary Ross. Today we have the first photos from the set as filming got under way yesterday, with our first look at Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter. It isn't known exactly how long filming is expected to last for, but Warner Bros. has already set a June 8, 2018 release date, going up against Transformers 6.

The photos surfaced on various Twitter accounts yesterday, with both Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett spotted together in the Big Apple. While no plot details have been confirmed, it is believed that Sandra Bullock is playing the ex-con sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean, with Cate Blanchett playing a character similar to Brad Pitt's Rusty Ryan from Ocean's Eleven. With its cast now in place for the highly-anticipated Ocean's Eight, Warner Bros. has set a June 8, 2018 release date for this project. This new all-female reboot will square off against what could be a huge summer blockbuster, Paramount's Transformers 6, while also arriving two weeks before Disney and LucasFilm's Star Wars spin-off centering on Han Solo. It will also open one week before Disney Pixar's long-awaited Toy Story 4 and two weeks before Universal's Jurassic World 2.

Entertainment Weekly reported on the release date last night, although there are still no plot details that have surfaced yet. We last reported on the project this past August, when it was revealed that production is being eyed to begin in October. The Toronto International Film Festival is currently in full swing, and one of the films making its world premiere next week is director George Nolfi's Birth of the Dragon, which centers on martial arts legend Bruce Lee. The film will have its premiere on September 13, but while we wait for this first ever screening, the first poster has surfaced, featuring Philip Ng as Bruce Lee. We love it when a good plan comes together, especially when that plan involves a heist and a fantastic ensemble. You may have heard about Ocean's Eight, a spinoff of the Ocean's movies, including Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen, that revolves around an all-female cast. That cast features Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett as its two leads (similar to the way George Clooney and Brad Pitt headed the other Ocean's movies), and now we've learned that they will be joined by Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and the Asian-American rapper Awkwafina, the latter of whom recently costarred in Neighbors 2 for those not as familiar with her work. With Ghostbusters launched as a successful all-female franchise for Sony, Warner Bros. is moving full-steam ahead on it's girl-centric Ocean's Eleven reboot. Titled Ocean's Eight and headlined by Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, this quasi-sequel will begin shooing in October in New York. Gary Ross will direct.

The caper thriller will feature some of today's leading actresses in secondary roles as they pull off the heist of a lifetime. Previously announced actresses Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling will now be joined by Anne Hathaway, singer Rihanna and Asian American rapper and actress Nora Lum, who many know better as Awkwafina. She first made her mark on Hollywood this past summer in the comedy sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

This comedy reboot is still casting even more high-profile actresses to fill out its powerful roster. According to an earlier report from Deadline, Elizabeth Banks was also interested in taking on a role, »

Steven Soderbergh heads south for movie about the Panama Papers

Steven Soderbergh is one of those directors that for every one "bleh" film he does (Ocean's Twelve, The Good German) there's about 15 more that are "hmmm, quite fascinating indeed" (please don't make me list all of them). Luckily, it sounds as though his streak with the latter is set to continue as he will be involved with making a movie about the Panama Papers scandal. Hmmm, quite... Read More »

Back in October, we reported that Oscar Winner Sandra Bullock had signed onto star in an all female reboot of the classic heist comedy Ocean's Eleven. Since then, we haven't heard much about this project, although word spread last month that Jennifer Lawrence was eyeing a role. Today we have word that, while Jennifer Lawrence won't be joining the cast, Elizabeth Banks is likely set to come aboard, along with new casting additions Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling.

Showbiz 411 reports that this project will start filming early next year in New York City. No details were given about the characters played by Elizabeth Banks, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter or Mindy Kaling. They will likely be part of this team of thieves assembled by Sandra Bullock's character, who is said to be the ex-con sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean from 2001's Ocean's Eleven, and »

Foster's Socially Conscious Wall Street Hostage Thriller Suffers from Triteness, Dishonesty

13 May 2016 6:57 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'Money Monster' with George Clooney and Jack O'Connell: TV celebrity and unwise investor/hostage taker. 'Money Monster' review: Jodie Foster movie suffers from both qualitative and intellectual disconnect Sometimes there's a difference between what a movie thinks it is and what it actually is. Usually it's a qualitative disconnect, as in “this movie thinks it's exciting but it's actually boring” or “this movie assumes Kevin Hart is funny when, in fact, he's not.” In the case of Money Monster, the divide is also an intellectual versus anti-intellectual one. The fourth film directed by Jodie Foster fancies itself a ripped from the headlines wail from the bottom of the economic ladder. A thriller-cum-exposé into how Wall Street and big media suckered average Americans into following the Pied Pipers of TV's financial punditry class over the cliff into economic ruin. However, the movie we're really getting is »

9 Film Projects That Were Rewritten to Become Sequels

30 January 2016 9:14 PM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

We recently saw the release of the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, which started life as an independent film unrelated to Cloverfield but was rewritten as a sequel (of sorts). This got us thinking about other films that were conceived as original projects but were altered by studios to become sequels to existing franchises.

When 10 Cloverfield Lane started out, it was an independent film called The Cellar, about a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up injured and locked in the bunker-like cellar of a man (John Goodman) she’s never met before. The strange man tells her that he found after an accident and brought her there to minister to her wounds but then a cataclysmic disaster ravaged the surface world and she has to stay there. She doesn’t believe him and spends the rest of the film trying to escape, while her memories of the night of her accident slowly return. »
