Storyline

Late one evening, Brenda Martin, a thirty-seven year old Caucasian woman from the proverbial wrong side of the tracks, enters Dempsy Medical Center in Dempsy, New Jersey with minor injuries, but she is also emotionally distraught. One of the people to who she tells her story is Dempsy Police Detective Lorenzo Council, a black man. That story is that she was just carjacked by another unknown black man when she took a shortcut that she had never traveled between the Armstrong housing projects, where she works at the Rainbow Club, a children's center, and her home in Gannon, New Jersey. Her emotional distress is because her four year old son, Cody, was asleep in the back seat of the car and is thus now in the hands of the carjacker. Brenda's brother, Danny Martin, a police detective in Gannon, cannot help but get directly involved in the investigation despite he operating outside his jurisdiction. His actions do not sit well with Council, who he insinuates is not only not doing his job, ... Written by Huggo

Quotes

Lorenzo Council: You know, you aren't the only person I got to visit in here today. My son, Jason... he's over in the state wing doing two to four for armed robbery.
Brenda Martin: No.
Lorenzo Council: Used my gun too.
Lorenzo CouncilBrenda Martin: Oh, no.
Lorenzo Council: Yeah. All my friends say to me: "Lorenzo, it ain't your fault that boy landed where he did. He got to take responsibility for that his own self. I ain't seen no pacifier in his mouth the last 10 years." Well, between you and me, it is my fault. I do feel responsible because the kind of man he is the kind of man I showed...

Not even a good try
22 February 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This movie was a real disappointment to me. All the elements for a fine picture were here. Good story, good actors. Sadly, the picture was not put together well. First blame should go to the director who was not able to restrict himself to the story lines he would be able to tell effectively. Next to blame is also the director who edited the film with superfluous characters and dead end plot lines. Several very good acting performances were squandered in this mishmash. Julliene Moore and Samuel L. were great (As always). Ron Eldard is a favorite of mine. He never gets the romantic lead, but provides great dramatic wallop. Unfortunately his character had nothing to do with the story. Typically, the scene where he overhears the confession of Billy is meaningless, nothing comes of it and his character disappears afterward. I'm not sure this was even a good try. Save your money.
