The Top Father's Day Films Ever Made? Here Are Five Dads - Ranging from the Intellectual to the Pathological

22 June 2015 4:02 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'Father of the Bride': Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams. Top Five Father's Day Movies? From giant Gregory Peck to tyrant John Gielgud What would be the Top Five Father's Day movies ever made? Well, there have been countless films about fathers and/or featuring fathers of various sizes, shapes, and inclinations. In terms of quality, these range from the amusing – e.g., the 1950 version of Cheaper by the Dozen; the Oscar-nominated The Grandfather – to the nauseating – e.g., the 1950 version of Father of the Bride; its atrocious sequel, Father's Little Dividend. Although I'm unable to come up with the absolute Top Five Father's Day Movies – or rather, just plain Father Movies – ever made, below are the first five (actually six, including a remake) "quality" patriarch-centered films that come to mind. Now, the fathers portrayed in these films aren't all heroic, loving, and/or saintly paternal figures. Several are »

Annecy: Les Armateurs Sets Paul Leluc For ‘French Riviera’ (Exclusive)

19 June 2015 9:43 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Annecy, France –France’s Les Armateurs, one of Europe’s most prestigious of animation production houses, has attached Paul Leluc, director of its TV toon series hit “The Long Long Holiday,” to helm “French Riviera,” the most ambitious of its animated feature productions.

The moves comes as Les Armateurs, which has won five Oscar nominations for its animated films, is studying entering live-action children’s entertainment, and “The Swallows of Kabul,” another flagship animated feature with a stunning teaser-trailer, has tied down both an international sales agent – Hengameh Panahi’s Celluloid Dreams — and domestic distribution in France via Memento Film Distribution.

Studiocanal is handling international sales on “French Riviera,” plus French distribution.

“’The Long Long Holiday’ had very good audiences, both on linear and catch-up TV, and was very well received by critics, and Paul Leluc has a great sense of how to tell a story,” said Ivan Rouveure, Les Armateurs executive managing director. »

AFI Honoree Steve Martin Is More Than Just a Comedian

4 June 2015 12:14 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Steve Martin isn’t someone who’s expecting to live on in posterity.

“I think it’s misguided if you actually believe you’re going be remembered,” he says. “There’s so many great artists, so many great writers filling up the shelves consuming essentially airtime and people fall by the wayside as time goes on. I don’t have any pretensions to any of that.”

The comedian, actor, writer, producer and banjo player was speaking by phone the morning after his final visit to “Late Show With Letterman” and before he began filming Ang Lee’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” — and about a month before he receives the 2015 AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

Given the list of film luminaries who have accepted AFI’s highest kudo before him — including Spielberg, Scorsese, Welles, Streep, Streisand, Hoffman, et al — he said he was “surprised” when learning he was following in their footsteps. »

Can Stx Entertainment be the Next Major Studio in Hollywood?

6 May 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

From its new offices atop the tallest building in Burbank, Stx Entertainment literally towers over the competition.

Backlots at Warner Bros., Disney and Universal can be glimpsed from the windows of the start-up company’s gleaming headquarters. The view is emblematic of Stx’s immense ambitions — to carve out a place for itself as the next major Hollywood studio.

Stx was launched last year by film producer Robert Simonds and Tpg managing partner Bill McGlashan with a mission to fill a hole in an entertainment business that has become fixated on budget-busting superhero epics. Instead of cooking up its own answer to the Marvel universe, the studio plans to produce films in the $20 million to $80 million budget range with big-name actors. It aims to release as many as 15 films annually by 2017, and already has lined up projects with Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts, director Gary Ross and “The Purge” producer Jason Blum. »

Film Critic Richard Corliss, 71, Dies After Major Stroke

24 April 2015 6:25 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Richard Corliss -- Time magazine's witty, passionate, and highly influential critic for the past 35 years -- died Thursday, April 23 in New York City, after suffering a major stroke last week. He was 71. Time editor Nancy Gibbs shared a letter to staff on Friday morning, and it was further posted on the magazine's site:

It is with great sorrow that I tell you that Richard Corliss died last night, following a stroke.

It's painful to try to find words, since Richard was such a master of them. They were his tools, his toys, to the point that it felt sometimes as though he had to write, like the rest of us breathe and eat and sleep. It's not clear that Richard ever slept, for the sheer expanse of his knowledge and writing defies the normal contours of professional life.

Everyone who had the pleasure of working with him has stories of his kindness, »
