Ann Widdecombe has admitted that she previously turned down annual offers to appear on Strictly Come Dancing. The former politician, who is now competing in the BBC dance competition, also told Star magazine that she had declined offers from other reality television programmes because she disapproves of them. I last met Ann Widdecombe when I interviewed her 13 years ago. Although already out of government, she was still in her Doris Karloff phase – practically boasting about being "short and fat and ugly", and stridently anti-image, anti-celebrity, anti-vanity. But my suspicions were aroused when she got her office to call three times in the following week, to enquire about when the piece would appear. Hmm, I remember thinking. Not quite without vanity after all, then.

'Strictly Come Dancing' hopeful Ann Widdecombe believes she is the new John Sergeant. The former MP has admitted she was inspired to take part in the BBC1 show after watching the ex-itn political editor's hilarious dance routines in 2008 which earned him the nickname 'Dancing pig'. She said: ''I took inspiration from John Sergeant. Watching him was the thing that persuaded me to do it. I'm like a pantomime act - four steps behind everyone else. I'm doing it for fun.
