This movie is a very rare piece of jewel among Chinese movies made in the post Cultural Revolution era, and in fact, the post revolutionary era.
This movie, which is by no means masterpiece by western standard, is however, a masterpiece for Chinese movie industry because relatively speaking, it lacks the political propaganda that is common among Chinese movies, (and for the very limited political propaganda there is, it is for good because it advocates reform and personal liberalization), just a plain simple love / romance story about the ethnic minority of Southwestern part of China.
