With school-age children in many parts of the country off Monday for Columbus Day, Hollywood is counting on an uptick at the boxoffice. So, with a strategy akin to throwing pasta on the wall and seeing what sticks, the studios are releasing five films wide. DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox most likely will battle for the top spot as DreamWorks opens Aardman Animation's Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, while Fox is hoping to lure women with the Curtis Hanson-directed In Her Shoes, starring Cameron Diaz. Also up for grabs are Morgan Creek's Two for the Money, distributed by Universal Pictures; The Gospel, from Sony Pictures' Screen Gems; and Lions Gate's teen comedy Waiting ... . »

Lions Gate feeling Q1 'Tension'

TORONTO -- Canadian independent producer and distributor Lions Gate Entertainment has seven more major features to release theatrically this year, including Grizzly Man, Lord of War, Waiting and A Good Woman, management said in a conference call Wednesday. Their performance will have to be solid to allow the firm to meet its full fiscal-year financial targets after the dismal boxoffice for High Tension prompted the Vancouver-based company to post a widened fiscal first-quarter loss late Tuesday (HR 8/10). "We were wrong," Lions Gate CEO Jon Feltheimer told analysts Wednesday of his company's bet on Alexandre Aja's horror flick about two girls fending off a sadistic psychopath. »

McKittrick picks up 'Wingman'

Rob McKittrick is swooping in to direct The Wingman for New Line Cinema. Written by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the romantic comedy centers on a man who, as a "wingman," is uncannily gifted at helping his friends pick up women. When he finally falls in love, it's with the one woman who can resist his powers. Paul Schiff is producing. Luke Ryan, Mark Kaufman and Matt Moore are overseeing for the studio. McKittrick's directorial debut, Waiting, which he also wrote, is slated for release from Lions Gate in October. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, and Justin Long. McKittrick also is writing and directing Mancrush at New Line. McKittrick is represented by Paradigm, H2F and attorney Randy Paul. »
