Although this film is a war movie, it is actually a honest depiction of Japanese war crime committed against prisoners-of-war during World War II: the death rate of Allied prisoners in German hand is around 4% while those died in Japanese hand is more than 27%. The brutal treatment of allied prisoners by Japanese is exact what the movie showed and thus qualifying this film as a docudrama.
