Masala magic!, 3 May 2004
Author: vivill (vivill_a@hotmail.com) from Oslo, Norway

It's got everything and everything is good! A fast paced and well structured snog in heaven. All the staples are here, mixed with a steady and loving hand, making this a joy. The plot features the India-Pakistan conflict, terrorists, lost family, sweet love and an undercover operation in a high school. Fast, funny - sweet and touching. All sincere, all tongue-in-cheek.The film references are sometimes a little over the top (the song and dance number "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?" is one thing, but the principal suddenly saying "Tango and Cash" for no apparent reason..?)But that's nothing: The characters have an edge. And they dance well. Sharhuk Khan brings tears to both his own and our eyes. And finally! a director who truly understands the lure of Khan's nose. Lovely, totally satisfying film!

well action? comedy? or a failure, 30 April 2004

In my eyes the later is not an option, no way is this a failure, maybe unexpected, from the start you're shoved into an thrilling action scene BRILLIANT matrix style (over done a bit, but fun never the less), they from action u r jolted into a fantastic comedy...

The fun never stopped, and good performance as ever from SRK new boy Z. Khan was gud didnt over do it, new girl A. Rao was brilliant....and Sushmita sen was SEXY AS HELL...OMG just brilliant!!!

Go watch it, if nothing else u will have a gud time...

Music was gud, Javed Akhtar on the ball as always and the music was 'cool'

Hope i haven't upset any1 with my views but, i really enjoyed it!

Plagiarism, Plot Confusion and a Masala Mess, 29 March 2007

Oh dear, a ditsy Bollywood director (Farah Khan) and a cast of crazies decide they can crash the party of the Hollywood major league. How do they attempt to do this? By shamelessly (and shoddily) spoofing such infamous movies as The Matrix, Mission Impossible and Grease. The results are hysterically horrendous: a masala film that is so mixed up that it is magnificent in its misguided madness.

The plot is perplexing. It initially starts out as an action movie centred around a goodwill gesture between India and Pakistan that is to be upset by a dastardly terrorist. Our hero, Bollywood hotshot Shah Rukh Khan, is then dispatched to go undercover at a high school to keep watch over his general's estranged daughter, and thus the film launches into college rom-com teen musical territory. There's an impossible amount of subplots and stupid characters amidst the product placement and posturing, good-looking protagonists that it's hard to follow and take seriously. The constant jumping from Hindi to English (in most cases, American slang: "say what?"), plus the incessant spoofing is laughable: The Matrix style bullet motion only looks unconvincing and amateurish; the action shots heavy-handed; the entire Grease rip-off that is the closing sequence is just an outright abomination.

Despite being truly dire , Main Hoon Na wins out in its own special way through the fact that it is brainlessly enjoyable and fun. The pure crappyness of the picture makes it a joy to watch, and plus decked out in all its Bollywood colour, it at least looks appealing. The fantastic dance sequences keep the energy going, even when they do dip into laughable excess. By the three-hour mark the film may have well worn out its welcome, but you can't fault the film's wild exuberance despite all the flaws.

Main Hoon Na (or I'm Here Now in English) is dumb, derivative and diabolically daft, but despite its nature as a terrible film there's merit in it as a majestic disaster. It's exploitation cinema at the most mind-bogglingly mental: a mainstream Indian production that won't fail to make anyone laugh as it imitates popular Western films with infantile ability and lets loose a whole barrel-load of ludicrous characters and subplots. Main Hoon Na may be unintentionally a great, sidesplitting watch, but in terms of film-making: it's gut-wrenchingly bad.

Main Hoon Na is a great film, which Farah Khan has directed with amazing style, music, stunts, lyrics, dialogue, and cool points. You walk out feeling pleased, and Main Hoon Na could not have been better.

Shah Rukh does a fabulous job as the suave, caring Maj. Ram Prasad Sharma, he is great for this role, he adds the perfect facial expressions and it all gels so well. Sunil Shetty makes a wonderful performance, he is the perfect Raghavan. Personally, I think MHN would be nothing without his spectacular talent. Sushmita Sen, adds a glamour and oomph factor, but doesn't really do anything. Zayed Khan does averagely, he overacts and underacts a lot. He works well with Shah Rukh though, they pull off some interesting scenes together. Amrita Rao, shows a lot of potential, shows some talent, and looks very pretty.

The immense fun and humour of Main Hoon Na, is given mainly by Satish Shah, Boman Irani, Rakhi Sawant, and Rajiv Punjabi, who add a lot of humour. Kirron Kher and Naseeruddin Shah add an emotional feeling, and Kabir Bedi gives a solid performance.

The music is amazing, each song has its own unique style, and the credits are very cleverly added to the last song, "Hai Yeh Fizaayen", which I enjoyed. The story is original and interesting. It bonds India and Pakistan nicely, and shows a certain closeness. It provides a lot of fun in one healthy, happy package.

When I first previewed this film I was on a family trip.

This was truly a great movie course the sound was a bit lousy and in the fight scenes, you couldn't see the kick ass moves.

But recently I borrowed it from a cousin and I experienced what I once felt, this time bigger and better.

A first I didn't know what to expect from the film cos I had given up Bollywood films for a bit, but every couple of years a great film comes along and this is one of them.

The film is many Hollywood films thrown in, for example "She's all that" "True Lies" "Matrix" and many other inspirations.

Shahrukh for me was Bollywood's best but this film truly makes him a versatile actor, he selects films that contain the highest bollywood standard of action, certain hings were overdone in the fight scenes for example towards the end when sunil shetty spins around and elbows shahrukh while he still is in the air but truly magnificent bollywood fight scenes.

But for me the highlights are Sushmita Sen and Shahrukh, I knew what would happen during the second time watching but I laughed out loud seeing Shahrukh's expressions.

Overall a great bollywood film.

Watch this movie when you're feeling' blue, 23 August 2006

This is a true feel-good movie. It has all the right elements - action, tragedy, comedy, romance....I loved it. Farah Khan handled this movie with extraordinary creativity and precision, for a first-time film-maker. She exhibited a true love for Indian cinema, and as far as I'm concerned, has given all those 'established' directors out there a run for their money. I also liked her story, and the way she interpreted it was delightful. It never lagged, or dragged on too long as some Hindi movies do. It was perfectly paced and just a gem to watch. For me, this was one of Shah Rukh Khan's best performances. He really breathed life into the character of Ram, playing action hero and disciplined soldier (as well as lover-boy) with amazing aplomb. I know SRK has a lot of haters, but for me the boy can act! He really puts his guts into it, and he always entertains.(And he's hot too, but that's another story.) Amrita Rao also puts in a very believable performance. I also enjoyed Zayed Khan and Sushmita Sen, as well as the rest of the cast, but for me SRK and Amrita had the stand-out performances. I really think SRK should've won the Filmfare Award for this role, but I guess he has enough on his shelf to make up for it, anyway. The music in the movie is absolutely great (charmingly done), as is the choreography (guess it always is, with Farah Khan at the helm). Watch out for the closing credits! They are so much fun. Truly a great movie, one to watch again and again. I will give this movie 9 out of 10, only because I was annoyed by a triviality.

This film has it all, 17 July 2006

What more can I say - this film has it all....

Action, Romance, Comedy, Suspense, Emotion, and almost forgot - Shahrukh Khan...

When the film was first announced back in 2002/3, i was very sceptical. I was saying to myself that i hope SK knows what he's doing by staring (and producing) a film directed by a new-comer. Boy was i wrong...

This has to be one of the most complete films i have seen and can watch it over and over again.

My sons are 9 and 6 and guess what they do when they are bored - yes, watch Main Ho Na

That's why it gets my 10 out of 10

This film is the best film ever, 20 January 2006

Sorry but this is like the best Indian film i have ever seen. It has Shahrukh Khan which makes it great and also a fantastic storyline and great action. This movie had everything. Action, romance, comedy etc. Zayed khan looked really cool in this movie and Amrita Rao played her part well. SHAHRUKH was obviously the best and after him definitely Zayed Khan who was great dressed as a "Hippie". You could talk about this film forever. I know I'm just writing a comment about it now and it did come out in 2004 but this movie deserves it. It was the greatest movie ever i believe of 2004. I know some may say Veer-zaara was but I still believe this was the best for youngsters as it had more action and comedy and quickpace rather than Veer-Zaara. Farah khan had a knack for making great movies. This new Happy New Year of hers sounds really good too. And I hope it will be another one like Main Hoon Na

Impressive as an introduction to Bollywood for non-Asians, 19 September 2005

I caught this film on a late night showing on TV and quickly became engrossed in it. Not understanding a word of Hindi, the subtitles were essential but reading them was hardly a chore. The film was bright and witty and carried you along effortlessly.

The plot follows an Indian Army Major sent back to college as a (mature) student to protect the daughter of the Brigadier whose life is threatened by a terrorist. He is also looking for his half-brother, another college student. The terrorist wishes to sabotage peace negotiations between India and Pakistan after 55 years of turmoil.

This film follows the traditional form for Bollywood with a series of songs and dance scenes but it also contains an interesting plot, moral dilemmas both personal and national, good acting and some impressive matrix-style action.

A good introduction to the genre for those of us who don't speak Hindi.

Mediocre Cinematography, 21 August 2005
4/10
Author: zoooink from Surrey, England

Romantics is what they're best at, period pieces too, the time is just not right for Bollywood to try and dish out action movies, to this day I haven't seen a decent action movie performed correctly in Bollywood. The action scenes are just too funny.

But this movie? Takes the biscuit, especially trying to add very dodgy special effects work, given half the chance, I could do better 3D work with one hand tied.

But saying that, the acting is good (except the guy who plays raghuvan Sunil Shetty? he's just bad, very bad!) But hats off to the rest of the cast. (Amrita Rao is just gorgeous!) You'll get there in the end guys! Keep up the good work.
