A mixed bag of goodies with two few goodies in it

"Wrestling Women U.S.A" is a compilation of women's-wrestling-related (and occasionally unrelated) audiovisual material, done by the cult-specializing company "Something Weird". The DVD is divided into separate sections, so this comment will follow a similar format.

We begin with six female wrestling matches from somewhere around the 1950s. The second one, between Cora Combs and Laraine Johnson, is a must-see: it contains plenty of artfully applied holds, plus Laraine is tremendously sexy. The third one, between Clara Mortensen and Rita Martinez, had the potential to be just as good, as both women have absolutely magnificent bodies and can also clearly wrestle, but it is marred by many jarring cuts in the original print, and by an awful commentary by two men who sound like Southern drunkards. Use the mute button. The rest of the matches are fair (the drunkards also comment on the fourth one; mute-button time again), but average and forgettable.

Then we get a full 67-minute movie, "Racket Girls", which is thoroughly inept in all departments, especially the soundtrack which obviously consists mainly of endlessly repeated pre-recorded sounds. Peaches Page, however, does give Jayne Mansfield a run for her money in the bust area.

Elsewhere, we find two short fluff pieces, "Sculli's Gymnasium" and "When Girls Need A Man", whose only point seems to be showing some cute girls with very little clothing on.

There is another match with the famous, wonderfully muscled Mildred Burke, but it is all but ruined by the appalling presentation: huge chunks of the match are missing, most of the footage is sped up, and there is an inappropriate music score and a cheeky commentary as well! A pity.

There is also a section called "Glamazons Living-Room Rumble", which is so embarrassing that I scanned through it in fast-forward.

"The Mad Whirl" has nothing to do with wrestling; it's ten minutes of female roller derby footage. Worth a look for fans of the sport, I suppose.

Finally, we get 11 minutes of "amateur outdoor catfighting" - but if you're expecting some sort of real wrestling action for a change, forget it; it's obviously staged.

On the whole, I would advise you to find the Combs vs. Johnson match on Youtube, and not bother with this DVD package.
