Romance novel
21 May 2010 | by (New York) – See all my reviews

Robert, a writer of romance novels, is preparing his latest book. His young secretary, Cecile, is his most valuable asset. When Claire, the philandering wife arrives at the country house where he has been working, she is in for a big surprise. Cecile has seen to everything, right down to the flowers for her bedroom. Claire could not care less. Claire and Robert have a strange relationship. They remain married, but he knows about her lovers. Robert is above reproaching a wife that seems to live her own life the way she wants. Coming home, this time around, Claire realizes the influence Cecile has over a husband she has neglected. Suddenly, she is aware of losing Robert to the much younger Cecile.

'La fidele infidele' is a sophisticated romantic comedy base on D. H. Lawrence short story adapted for the screen by its director, Jean-Louis Benoit and his collaborator Pascal Laine. The flavor of the story is typically French. Nowhere but in France this frank tale of living in an arrangement could be done so well.

The delicious Marie-France Pisier makes a memorable Claire. She seems to be having fun playing this naughty woman who has taken her husband for granted and suddenly, feels a kind of jealousy she never thought she was capable of experiencing. Francois Berleand, the versatile actor does well with his take on Robert. Clotilde Courau is perfect as Cecile, the secretary that secretly loves Robert.
