E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Review

25 October 2012 5:05 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Steven Spielberg's' E.T.:The Extra-Terrestrial 30th Anniversary Blu-ray arrived on shelves on October 9, just in time to get the Halloween season off to a glorious start. This is the second Spielberg classic to get the Blu-ray special treatment, with Jaws recently being released as well. The movie stars Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton and K.C. Martel. Watching this again, I was reminded of how special this film is. E.T. looks the best I have seen it in a long time on Blu-ray with it's beautifully restored filmic 1080p video transfer. The sound is equally impressive, with a DTS-hd Master Audio 7.1 This is enough of a reason to buy this film, but the added special features make this purchase a no-brainer.

Melissa Mathison wrote this wonderful screenplay that not only introduces audiences to a different side of Aliens, but also takes us inside of a broken family. »

Blu Review: E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

25 October 2012 4:52 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Steven Spielberg is rolling out his classic blockbusters on Blu-ray finally and I can't help but think to myself, "What's the point in reviewing these things?" Will anything I say positive or negative keep someone from making their own decision to purchase these in the newest high-definition format? Who doesn't want "Jaws," the Indiana Jones films, or the latest upgrade in the legendary director's collection, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial in the best possible version they can get it?

I hate to keep asking hypothetical questions, but do we really need a synopsis for this movie? A group of aliens leave behind a member of their landing party. The short creature finds his way to the suburbs of California, where a little boy takes him in and names him E.T. The alien soon becomes sick and must contact his home planet to be rescued before he dies.

Steven Spielberg's 'E.T.' Coming To Blu-Ray Without The Walkie Talkies

1 June 2012 7:40 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It’s taken a few years but Steven Spielberg’s classic ”E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” is finally getting a high-def upgrade. The 30th anniversary edition of the film, which hits stores this October, will feature an all-new digitally remastered transfer of the original 1982 theatrical cut. That’s right kids, the much-maligned 20th anniversary 2002 reissue won’t be making appearance on the disc other than in the form of two deleted scenes, so you don’t need to worry about seeing any walkie-talkies.

For those of you might not remember, the DVD release a decade back swapped out the guns used by the federal agents for more family friendly and less threatning walkie talkies, much to the dismay of fans (though the original theatrical cut was included as well). Why Spielberg bothered with the tinkering is unclear, but last year he made it known which version he preferred and wanted people to see. »

Universal has still not issued a definitive release date for Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial to phone home on Blu-ray. They have, however, confirmed an October window for release and passed along all the technical and bonus features that will be packed onto the disc.

For his 30th anniversary and high-def debut, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial will arrive on Blu-ray in a DVD, digital copy and UltraViolet combo pack. Tech specs include 1.85:1 1080p video and 7.1 DTS-hd Master Audio (assumed; the press release states "7.1 Dolby Digital" which is likely incorrect). Most importantly, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial on Blu-ray is the original theatrical cut without the CGI inserted FBI cell phones replacing rifles on the DVD release.

Obviously E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial coming to Blu-ray is a huge deal for Universal and movie enthusiasts alike. As such, Universal is packing the Blu-ray release with an awesome selection of bonus features as outlined below:
