In order to fully understand and appreciate this movie, audience needs to know some traditional cultural heritages in Chinese culture.
According to traditional Confucian teaching, the eldest son, or the only son of the family has the responsibility to carry on the profession of the father. For example, if the father is a college professor, then the son should become a college professor as well. Personal interest is not important, and it is ignored and even denounced because such thing would violate filial piety. In addition to profession, there are also other burdens of previous generations the son must inherit, and this movie accurately depicted this problems in the traditional Chinese culture and did a rather excellent job of introspection.
