The literal translation of the title of this movie is: The Serious Journey.
Although the disastrous Cultural Revolution has ended, the reform in China had yet to come, and China was still reigned by the hard line conservatives who despite their hatred of the Cultural Revolution, still revered Mao and making excuses for Mao by blaming the Cultural Revolution on the Gang of Four.
This movie is the perfect reflection of such mentality which blamed every bad thing on the Gang of Four, despite the fact that Mao was the one behind them all these times.
