Bidding his wife and Tommy good-bye, Mr. Barton, a captain in the Confederate Army, starts for the war to take his place at the head of his troop. The boy is filled with the war spirit. Some of Tommy's young friends enter the house with drum and mimic gun and try to enlist Tommy in service. Tommy pleads with his mother to let him join their ranks, but she refuses. Awaiting his opportunity, the little fellow steals away and is soon in charge of the juvenile warriors. In their play they come across a deserted cave, where they make one of their number prisoner. Mammy, who has been sent after Tommy, sees him coming from the cave and immediately drags him toward home. On their way a horse comes dashing down the road, with its rider, who falls from the saddle as he nears Tommy and Mammy. At a glance Tommy recognizes his father, who has been wounded and is being pursued by the Union soldiers. Tommy hides father in some bushes nearby, starts the horse down the road and tells the Federal ...
