Ryan Murphy is expanding his TV reach: He and fellow "Glee" writer Ali Adler have sold a comedy project to NBC.

News of the project got out last week, just as they were about to begin shopping it to the networks. NBC scored the rights to it by committing to a put pilot -- i.e., ordering a pilot with a financial penalty if it doesn't air. Murphy is currently overseeing Fox's "Glee" and FX's "American Horror Story," both of which he co-created, and Adler is a writer and co-exec producer on "Glee."

According to Deadline, the pilot is about a unconventional family consisting of a woman and two gay men, with both Murphy and Adler drawing on their own experiences in writing it.

They'll executive produce the project with Murphy's producing partner Dante Di Loreto, and Murphy is also set to direct the pilot.
