The literal translation of the title of this movie is: The Story of the City of Leaves.
This movie is based on the short novel written in the post Cultural Revolutionary era China with the same title, and the short novel, in turn, was based on memoirs of people, many of whom were portrayed in the movie.
This movie is a typical introspection work on the disastrous Cultural Revolution, and it represents one of the standard formats followed by many movies, as well as literatures, such as novels, of its time. The original short novel follows the format much more closely than this movie.
