This go-round, the 12-year-old protagonist Luka, Haroun’s younger brother, enters the World of Magic accompanied by a talking dog named Bear and bear named Dog to save their famous storyteller father from doom. Below, Rushdie—who blurs the line between adult and children’s literature—reveals “the terrible thing that happened on the beautiful starry night” that begins Luka’s quest.
