The literal translation of the title of this film is: Contractual Couple.
As a sign of personal liberalization in the era of reform, this movie originally intended to emphasize marrying somebody for love. However, what was interesting is what happened after the airing of this film: there was fierce unexpected debate it caused.
In the traditional Confucian teaching, spousal selection is based on economical and financial consideration, people should not get married if they do not have a solid economical and financial background because they would not be able to provide for their families for certain if they got married.
This film gives the impression of the old idea about marriage that disregards love is molding the marriage into a business contract, which should not be, but this idea (whether intentional or unintentional) backfires because although the public welcomed the new ideas of marrying somebody out of love and abolishment of arranged marriage, the traditional idea of having a strong economical and financial background prior to the marriage so that one can provide for the future family for sure is still cheered and deeply valued.
